Is cortex unnecessary ?

چکیده
A key contention of Klein & Barron (2016) is that consciousness does not depend on cortical structures. A critical appraisal suggests they have overestimated the strength of their evidence. Sean Hermanson is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Florida International University in Miami, specializing in the philosophy of mind and cognitive science. His work on animals includes articles on bees, monkeys and bats, though he also has interests in the metaphysics of consciousness, introspection, human nature and implicit bias. http://philosophy.fiu.edu/faculty/sean-allen-hermanson/ Klein & Barron’s (2016) argument by analogy can be paraphrased as follows: (1) Cortex isn’t necessary for phenomenal “what it is like” consciousness, since a cognitive information processing system that functions very much like the vertebrate midbrain suffices. (2) The insect nervous system functions very much like the vertebrate midbrain.

Re-evaluating the relationships among filtering activity, unnecessary storage, and visual working memory capacity.
The amount of task-irrelevant information encoded in visual working memory (VWM), referred to as unnecessary storage, has been proposed as a potential mechanism underlying individual differences in VWM capacity. In addition, a number of studies have provided evidence for additional activity that initiates the filtering process originating in the frontal cortex and basal ganglia, and is therefor...
