Meal-Induced Oxidative Stress

چکیده

The target of interventions to reduce cardiovascular events has focused on total (CHOL) and low-density (LDLC) cholesterol levels. Data from the Framingham Heart Study would suggest that 50% of individuals with so-called “normal” LDLC levels (100 mg/dl or 2.6 mmol/L) would have atherosclerosis by age 50 [1]. In the Pravastatin or Atorvastatin Evaluation and Infection Therapy (PROVE-IT), aggressive cholesterol reduction as part of a secondary trial in highrisk patients only prevented 20% of cardiac events [2]. Bayturan et al reported that, even when aggressive treatment was used to lower mean LDLC to 58.4 mg/dl (1.5 mmol/L), plaque volume could be shown to increase in 20% of the subjects [3]. Attempts to explain this residual risk have ranged from triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC) [4] to non-HDLC [5] and biomarkers of inflammatory stress [6].

Orange juice neutralizes the proinflammatory effect of a high-fat, high-carbohydrate meal and prevents endotoxin increase and Toll-like receptor expression.

BACKGROUND The intake of glucose or a high-fat, high-carbohydrate (HFHC) meal, but not orange juice, induces an increase in inflammation and oxidative stress in circulating mononuclear cells (MNCs) of normal-weight subjects. OBJECTIVE We investigated the effect of orange juice on HFHC meal-induced inflammation and oxidative stress and the expression of plasma endotoxin and Toll-like receptors...

Protective activity of processed tomato products on postprandial oxidation and inflammation: a clinical trial in healthy weight men and women.

SCOPE This study was designed to evaluate the ability of tomato rich in lycopene to modify postprandial oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial function in healthy weight individuals. METHODS AND RESULTS Twelve women and 13 men (mean age = 27 ± 8 years; mean body mass index= 22 ± 2) consumed high-fat meals known to induce postprandial oxidative stress on two separate occasions contain...

Timing of antioxidant vitamin ingestion alters postprandial proatherogenic serum markers.

BACKGROUND This study was designed to determine the optimal timing of vitamins E and C to prevent oxidative stress induced by a high-fat evening meal in type 2 diabetes. METHODS AND RESULTS Eleven subjects were admitted on 4 occasions. Euglycemia was maintained for 24 hours by insulin infusion. Participants were fed a high-fat test supper equivalent to a McDonald's Big Mac Meal. Blood was dra...

Effect of a walnut meal on postprandial oxidative stress and antioxidants in healthy individuals

BACKGROUND In vitro studies rank walnuts (Juglans regia) among the plant foods high in antioxidant capacity, but whether the active constituents of walnuts are bioavailable to humans remains to be determined. The intention of this study was to examine the acute effects of consuming walnuts compared to refined fat on meal induced oxidative stress. At issue is whether the ellagitannins and tocoph...

Red wine mitigates the postprandial increase of LDL susceptibility to oxidation.

The aim of the present study was to verify the extent of oxidative stress induced by a meal at plasma and LDL level, and to investigate the capacity of red wine to counteract this action. In two different sessions, six healthy men ate the same test meal consisting of "Milanese" meat and fried potatoes. The meal was taken either with 400 ml red wine or with an isocaloric hydroalcoholic solution....

Benfotiamine prevents macro- and microvascular endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress following a meal rich in advanced glycation end products in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE Diabetes is characterized by marked postprandial endothelial dysfunction induced by hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and dicarbonyls (e.g., methylglyoxal [MG]). In vitro hyperglycemia-induced MG formation and endothelial dysfunction could be blocked by benfotiamine, but in vivo effects of benfotiamine on postprandial endothelial dysfunction ...
