چکیده

AIM To investigate the effect of fasting times for clear fluids and solids/non-clear fluids on gastric content volume using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS Pediatric patients undergoing diagnostic MRI under deep propofol sedation, with the stomach located within the area of diagnostic study, were included in this clinical observational study. According to standard institutional guidelines, children were allowed to eat/drink until 4 h and to drink clear fluids until 2 h before scheduled induction time of anesthesia. Gastric content volume per kg body weight (GCV(w)) was determined using MRI and compared with actual fasting times prior to induction. RESULTS Overall 68 patients aged from 0.3 to 19.6 (2.8) years were investigated. Fasting time for clear fluids ranged from 1.1 to 15.5 (5.5) h, for non-clear fluids/solids from 4.0 to 20.2 (6.7) h. GCV(w) ranged from 0.2 to 6.3 (0.75) ml·kg(-1) and showed no significant negative correlation to fasting times for clear fluids (r = -0.07, P = 0.60) and non-clear fluids/solids (r = -0.08, P = 0.51). CONCLUSIONS Based on this preliminary data, GCV(w) showed considerable variation but did not correlate with fasting times in children and adolescent patients. Recommended fasting times were often exceeded.

Propofol-based sedation regimen for infants and children undergoing ambulatory magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND Propofol is widely used for infants and children requiring sedation for magnetic resonance imaging. However, increased doses of propofol may quickly lead to an unintended deep sedation and respiratory depression. Thus, an appropriate low dosage, which nevertheless ensures sufficient sleep for successful magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) completion, would probably minimize respiratory ...

A comparison of the sedative, hemodynamic, and respiratory effects of dexmedetomidine and propofol in children undergoing magnetic resonance imaging.

We compared the sedative, hemodynamic, and respiratory effects of dexmedetomidine and propofol in children undergoing magnetic resonance imaging procedures. Sixty children were randomly distributed into two groups: The dexmedetomidine (D) group received 1 microg/kg initial dose followed by continuous infusion of 0.5 microg.kg(-1).h(-1) and a propofol group (P) received 3 mg/kg initial dose foll...

O-19: A Comparison of Pelvic Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Trans-Vaginal and Trans-Rectal Sonography with Laparoscopic Findings in The Diagnosis of Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis

Background The performance of TVS, TRS and MRI for the diagnosis of DIE have been separately reported in earlier studies. However, the three methods have not been concurrently compared in terms of their overall performance and classified results as per different anatomical locations of DIE lesions in a large study population. This study was an attempt to compare pelvic magnetic resonance imagin...

Comparison of propofol with pentobarbital/midazolam/fentanyl sedation for magnetic resonance imaging of the brain in children.

OBJECTIVE Propofol and pentobarbital, alone or combined with other agents, are frequently used to induce deep sedation in children for MRI. However, we are unaware of a previous comparison of these 2 agents as part of a randomized, controlled trial. We compared the recovery time of children after deep sedation with single-agent propofol with a pentobarbital-based regimen for MRI and considered ...

Sedation using 5% lidocaine patches, midazolam and propofol in a combative, obese adolescent with severe autistic disorder undergoing brain magnetic resonance imaging: a case report

We present a 17-year-old man who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and laboratory exams for uncontrolled seizure. Patients with an autistic disorder require deep sedation or, occasionally, general anesthesia even for radiologic exams or simple procedures. The anesthetic management of an obese, violent patient with a severe autistic disorder and mental retardation can be challenging to ...
