چکیده

Several aspects of Commercial Off-The-Self (COTS) component integration are being discussed in the literature as challenges to utilizing COTS components in software development. Among these issues are interface matching, inter-component communications, functional matching, and integration testing. This paper highlights potential problems and risks associated with integrating COTS components, evaluates and compares selected integration tools and consulting services, presents an approach to COTS integration to over come some potential problems, and outlines a conceptual integration model for COTS components.

COCOTS: a COTS software integration cost model - model overview and preliminary data findings

As the use of commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components becomes ever more prevalent in the creation of large software systems, the need for the ability to reasonably predict the true lifetime cost of using such software components grows accordingly. In using COTS components, immediate short-term gains in direct development effort & schedule are possible, but usually as a trade-off for a more co...

Automating Integration of Heterogeneous COTS Components

Mismatches make COTS components difficult to be incorporated. In this paper, an approach is presented to eliminate mismatches among COTS components, which can truly consider COTS components as black boxes. In the approach, only the assembly description of components is required, based on which adaptors for resolving mismatches can be generated automatically. This paper also described an agent-b...

Requirements Engineering for COTS Selection

There is growing interest in the notion of software development through the planned integration of COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) products. The potential advantages of this integrationcentric approach are shorter development time and reduced cost. Often a COTS based development process consists of an evaluation, selection, adaptation, integration, and evolution of components obtained from exte...

A Perspective on the Economic Life Span of COTS-based Software Systems: the COTS-LIMO Model

The use of commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components is becoming ever more prevalent in the creation of large software systems. The rationale usually cited for this trend is that by using COTS components, immediate short-term gains in direct development effort & schedule are possible—admittedly, often as a trade-off for a more complicated long-term post-deployment maintenance environment. Even ...

Empirical Observations on COTS Software Integration Effort Based on the Initial COCOTS Calibration Database

As the use of commercial-of-the-shelf (COTS) components becomes ever more prevalent in the creation of large software systems, the need for the ability to reasonably predict the true lifetime cost of using such software components grows accordingly. This paper presents empirically-based findings about the effort associated with activities found to be significant in the development of systems us...
