چکیده

The pattern of mineralization was studied in the mandibular condyle of the young adult rat. Specimens were rendered anorganic in NaOC1 and examined in a scanning electron microscope. A mineralized cartilage front was found to persist on the articular aspect of the condyle. The surface is characterized by closely approximating chondrocyte lacunae enclosed to different degrees within the mineralized front. The mineralized component itself is calcospheritic; larger calcospherites forming the inner concave wall and smaller calcospherites forming the outer convex wall. The calcospherites are comprised of irregular crystalline plates radiating from the center of the mass. The bony surface of the ramus immediately beneath the condyle is typified by Howship's lacunae alternating with areas of forming bone indicating intense remodeling activity. The mandibular condyle has not been examined in this way before. The information is relevant to consideration of growth and development, functional adaptation, physiological aging, and pathological change.

Ultrastructural study of upper surface layer in rat mandibular condylar cartilage by quick-freezing method.

The purpose of the present study is to clarify native ultrastructures of upper surface layers of the rat mandibular condylar cartilage in vivo by a quick-freezing method. The mandibular cartilaginous tissues were removed with their articular discs attached without opening the lower joint cavity. The specimens were processed for light microscopy, transmission or scanning electron microscopy. Dee...

Effect of alendronate on endochondral ossification in mandibular condyles of growing rats

The replacement of the calcified cartilage by bone tissue during the endochondral ossification of the mandibular condyle is dependent of the resorbing activity of osteoclats. After partial resorption, calcified cartilage septa are covered by a primary bone matrix secreted by osteoblasts. Osteoadherin (OSAD) is a small proteoglycan present in bone matrix but absent in cartilage during the endoch...

Induction of Mineralized Nodule Formation in Rat Bone Marrow Stromal Cell Cultures by Silk Fibroin

Background: Silk fibroin is a suitable protein for osteogenesis by inducing markers of bone formation in the cultures of osteoblasts, so we examined the ability of this protein to induce mineralized nodules in the rat bone marrow stromal cell cultures. Methods: Bone marrow stromal cells obtained from 4 to 6 weeks old Spruge-Dawely male rats were grown in primary culture for seven days and then ...

Growth regulation of the rat mandibular condyle and femoral head by transforming growth factor-β1, fibroblast growth factor-2 and insulin-like growth factor-I

The importance of the mandibular condyle for craniofacial growth and development has often been discussed. Several theories on craniofacial morphogenesis have been proposed, of which some define the mandibular condyle as an important growth centre (Baume, 1961; van Limborgh, 1972); others consider it as an organ without independent growth potential that is mainly adapting to the function of sur...

Development with age of human articular cartilage surface structure. A survey by interference microscopy of the lateral femoral condyle.

The weight-bearing surfaces of the lateral femoral condyles taken from twenty normal human cadavers aged 0-47 years have been examined by reflected light interference microscopy (RLIM) and by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The surfaces appeared normal by naked eye examination. The presence of both 200-400 mum diameter secondary undulations and small ovoid 20-45 mum diameter tertiary hollow...
