چکیده

The purpose of this work is to describe how the visual system groups surfaces of unequal lightness under complex patterns of illumination. We propose that the Gestalt principle of Grouping by Regularity explains this process better than the more often cited principle of Grouping by Similarity. In our first experiment we demonstrate that in a perceptual organization task, pitting proximity against illumination gradients, discounting the illuminant was contingent upon the periodicity of the illuminant. Traditional theories of lightness constancy and discounting the illuminant (Rock, Nijhawan, Palmer, & Tudor, 1992) cannot account for such effects. Three more experiments show that grouping is affected more by local luminance ratios than constant reflectance ratios. We conclude from these findings that Grouping by Regularity is a powerful grouping principle that operates pre-constancy.

Vehicle tracking is an important issue in Intelligence Transportation Systems (ITS) to estimate the location of vehicle in the next frame. In this paper, a feature-based vehicle tracking algorithm using Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) feature tracker is developed. In this algorithm, a merge and split-based hierarchical two-stage grouping algorithm is proposed to represent vehicles from the tracked fe...

Perceiving illumination inconsistencies in scenes.

The human visual system is adept at detecting and encoding statistical regularities in its spatiotemporal environment. Here, we report an unexpected failure of this ability in the context of perceiving inconsistencies in illumination distributions across a scene. Prior work with arrays of objects all having uniform reflectance has shown that one inconsistently illuminated target can 'pop out' a...

Pattern Regularity as a Visual Key

Regular structures, flat and non-flat, are perceived as regular in a wide range of viewing angles and under varying illumination. In this papers, we exploit this simple observation and develop an invariant measure of pattern regularity. The measure is the maximum of the regularity values obtained for different directions within the pattern. We demonstrate that the regularity feature introduced ...

Perceptual organization in lightness

The earliest thinking about lightness assumed that perceptual experience correlates with local stimulation. Wallach’s (1948) celebrated disk/annulus experiments showed that lightness depends on relative luminance, not absolute luminance, but his ratio theory recognized perceptual structure in only a minimal way. Work following the cognitive revolution showed that lightness depends on (1) depth ...

Grouping illumination frameworks.

According to Koffka (1935), the lightness of a target surface is determined by the relationship between the target and the illumination frame of reference to which it belongs. However, each scene contains numerous illumination frames, and judging each one separately would lead to an enormous amount of computing. Grouping those frames that are in the same illumination would simplify the computat...
