Psfc/ja-97-8 Mode Conversion to Ion-bernstein Waves of Fast Alfven Waves with Poloidal Wavenumbers in Sheared Magnetic Fields
نویسنده
چکیده
Previous theoretical analysis [1] of mode conversion of fast Alfv6n waves (FAW) to ion-Bernstein waves (IBW) neglected poloidal variations of the fields and magnetic shear. Full-wave codes show incident FAW fields focused into multiple poloidal modes near the ion-ion hybrid resonance (IHR)[2]. A new mode conversion model has been constructed including poloidal wavenumbers and poloidal magnetic field. The model consists of two coupled equations for the perpendicular components of the FAW electric field. These equations are numerically integrated to find the fraction of FAW power resonantly absorbed at the IHR. When the high-field-side right-hand cutoff is included, nonzero poloidal wavenumbers can change the triplet resonator phase and improve mode conversion at low k1l.

Mode conversion (MC) of long wavelength fast electromagnetic magnetosonic waves (fast wave, or FW) into shorter wavelength electrostatic (ion-Bernstein, or IBW) or slow electromagnetic (ion cyclotron, or ICW) waves is of great interest in laboratory, magnetic fusion and space physics experiments. Such processes are particularly important in multi-ion species plasmas. In this paper we report rec...

Interaction of Alfven waves with plasma inhomogeneity generates phase mixing which can cause the dissipation of Alfven waves. We investigated the dissipation of standing Alfven waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in solar spicules. Moreover, the transition region between chromosphere and corona was considered. Our numerical simulation showed that ...

Magnetically confined plasma can be heated with high power microwave sources. In spherical torus the electron plasma frequency exeeds the electron cyclotron frequency (EC) and, as a consequence, electromagnetic waves at fundamental and low harmonic EC cannot propagate within the plasma. In contrast, electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) readily propagate in spherical torus plasma and are absorbed str...

it has been shown that, in overdense plasmas of the type encountered in spherical tori, electron Bernstein waves can be excited in a plasma by mode conversion of either an externally launched X mode or an O mode. The electron Bernstein waves are strongly absorbed by electrons in the region where the wave frequency matches the Doppler broadened electron cyclotron resonance frequency or its harmo...

Sheared zonal ow helps to reduce the turbulent transport caused by the ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode. Rosenbluth and Hinton (R-H) calculated the residual zonal ow level for radial wavelengths that are much larger than the ion poloidal gyroradius. Their calculation is extended to treat arbitrary radial wavelengths. For the radial wavelengths that approach the ion poloidal gyroradius, but...
