The distinguishing criteria established by WHO effectively reproducible when all selection criteria were fulfilling but sometimes fail to provide a reliable diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to evaluate mast cell counts and their distribution among OLP and lichenoid lesions. The density and localization of mast cells was examined in 22 patients with a diagnosis of OLP (11 patients) or oral lichenoid reactions (11 patients) by c-kit/CD117 immunohistochemical and toluidine blue histochemical staining. Data were analyzed using either the Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney U tests. No significant difference in the total number of mast cells was observed between the two groups (P = 0.599); however, a significant difference was observed in mast cell counts between reticular and junctional zones (P<0.05). The findings of the present study suggest that mast cells play a key role in the pathogenesis of oral inflammation; however, the ability of mast cell measurements to reliably differentiate between lichen planus and other lichenoid mimickers was limited as the number of mast cells was found to be increased in both the conditions.

Histochemical analysis of pathological alterations in oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid lesions.

Lichen planus is a dermatologic disease of unknown etiology characterized by keratotic plaques on the skin. Many patients also harbor white lesions of the oral mucosa. The literature contains numerous reports of lichen planus-like lesions evolving in conjunction with the administration of a variety of pharmacologic agents. It is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish such lesions from one...

Role of Mast Cells in Oral Lichen Planus and Oral Lichenoid Reactions

Introduction Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic T cell mediated disease of oral mucosa, skin, and its appendages with a prevalence of 0.5 to 2.6% worldwide. Oral lichenoid reactions (OLR) are a group of lesions with diverse aetiologies but have clinical and histological features similar to OLP, thereby posing a great challenge in differentiating both lesions. Mast cells are multifunctional i...

Immunohistochemical Evaluation of CD86 Expression in Ero-sive Oral Lichen Planus

Background and Aim: Lichen planus is an inflammatory autoimmune mucocutaneous disease. Stimulation of T cells and antigen-presenting cells (APCs), such as dendritic cells, mediates apoptosis of keratinocytes and basement membrane destruction. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of one of the immune cell markers (CD86) in erosive oral lichen planus. Materials and Methods: In...

Immunohistochemical analysis of Ki-67 expression in oral lichen planus lesions

Introdouction: Lichen planus is a chronic, relatively common, dermal mucosa disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced lichen planus as a premalignant condition. Ki-67 is a protein that can be detected in all active phases of the cell cycle, especially in the G2 and M phases. Considering the major role of Ki-67 in the regulation of the cell cycle and the fact that it is one of ...
