Constraints on Galaxy Formation from the Tully - Fisher Relation

چکیده

New models for the formation of disk galaxies are presented. I discuss the constraints on galaxy formation that follow from fitting the model to the near-infrared Tully-Fisher (TF) relation, with an emphasis on reproducing the small amount of scatter observed. Once the parameters that describe the supernova feedback are tuned to fit the slope of the observed TF relation, the model reproduces the correct amount of TF scatter, and yields gas mass fractions, mass-to-light ratios, and characteristic accelerations that are all in excellent agreement with observations.

Dynamical Constraints on Disk Galaxy Formation

The rotation curves of disk galaxies exhibit a number of striking regularities. The amplitude of the rotation is correlated with luminosity (Tully-Fisher), the shape of the rotation curve is well predicted by the luminous mass distribution, and the magnitude of the mass discrepancy increases systematically with decreasing centripetal acceleration. These properties indicate a tight connection be...

Formation and evolution of disk galaxies

Global star formation is the key to understanding galaxy disk formation. This in turn depends on gravitational instability of disks and continuing gas accretion as well as minor merging. A key component is feedback from supernovae. Primary observational constraints on disk galaxy formation and evolution include the Schmidt-Kennicutt law, the Tully-Fisher relation and the galaxy luminosity funct...

Effects of galaxy interaction on the Tully - Fisher relation : CO vs H I linewidths

We investigate effects of galaxy-galaxy interaction on the Tully-Fisher relation. The HI linewidth in interacting galaxies is significantly broader than the CO linewidth, and the HI to CO linewidth ratio is proportional to the strength of interaction. This provides different distances to galaxies measured by the Tully-Fisher relation with the CO and HI linewidths. Distances derived from the HI ...

Physical Sources of Scatter in the Tully-fisher Relation

We analyze residuals from the Tully-Fisher relation for the emission-line galaxies in the Nearby Field Galaxy Survey, a broadly representative survey designed to fairly sample the variety of galaxy morphologies and environments in the local universe for luminosities from MB 1⁄4 15 to 23. For a subsample consisting of the spiral galaxies brighter than M R 1⁄4 18, we find strong correlations betw...

Tully–Fisher Relation and its Implications for Halo Density Profile and Self-interacting Dark Matter

We show that the Tully-Fisher relation observed for spiral galaxies can be explained in the current scenario of galaxy formation without invoking subtle assumptions, provided that galactic-sized dark haloes have low concentrations which do not change significantly with halo circular velocity. This conclusion does not depend significantly on whether haloes have cuspy or flat profiles in the inne...
