چکیده

Male and female nonhuman primates from all living major radiations are known to performautosexual behaviors (masturbation) implying that masturbation is a facet of our own hominidancestor's sexual repertoire. At a proximate level masturbation satisfies sexual desires leadingto a hormonal state of relaxation and reduced aggression in both sexes. This might be ofimportance above all in social living primate species. Ultimately, masturbation might bebeneficial for males since it helps to discard old and low-quality sperm from the genital tractallowing the production of new sperm with enhanced fitness. For female masturbation, however, an ultimate explanation is still lacking.

Effect of mating activity and dominance rank on male masturbation among free-ranging male rhesus macaques.

The adaptive function of male masturbation is still poorly understood, despite its high prevalence in humans and other animals. In non-human primates, male masturbation is most frequent among anthropoid monkeys and apes living in multimale-multifemale groups with a promiscuous mating system. In these species, male masturbation may be a non-functional by-product of high sexual arousal or be adap...

Sex attractants in primates.

The role of olfactory sexual attractants in the sex behavior of primates is discussed. These olfactory cues can prompt mounting, masturbation, and ejaculation, increase grooming behavior, and reduce aggressive behavior. In rhesus monkeys, the addition of phenylpropanoic and parahydroxyphenylpropanoic acids to a synthetic acid mixture has been shown to enhance the effectiveness of the syntheti...

Perisaccadic visual perception.

Primates use frequent, rapid eye movements to sample their visual environment. This is a fruitful strategy to make the best use of the highly sensitive foveal part of the retina, but it requires neural mechanisms to bind the rapidly changing visual input into a single, stable percept. Studies investigating these neural mechanisms have typically assumed that perisaccadic perception in nonhuman p...

Application of the genome editing tool CRISPR/Cas9 in non-human primates.

In the past three years, RNA-guided Cas9 nuclease from the microbial clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) adaptive immune system has been used to facilitate efficient genome editing in many model and non-model animals. However, its application in nonhuman primates is still at the early stage, though in view of the similarities in anatomy, physiology, behavior and g...

Primates in Alcohol Research

The genetic similarity to humans of nonhuman primates makes them well suited to serve as models of complex human disorders such as alcoholism. Like humans, nonhuman primates vary with respect to their alcohol consumption, even within the same species. Studies of the origins of high consumption among nonhuman primates have suggest ed t ha t bo th gene tic and environmental factors play a role in...
