چکیده

This study presents the first report of Artificial Improvisation, or improvisational theatre performed live, on-stage, alongside an artificial intelligence-based improvisational performer. The Artificial Improvisor is a form of artificial conversational agent, or chatbot, focused on open domain dialogue and collaborative narrative generation. Using stateof-the-art machine learning techniques spanning from natural language processing and speech recognition to reinforcement and deep learning, these chatbots have become more lifelike and harder to discern from humans. Recent work in conversational agents has been focused on goal-directed dialogue focused on closed domains such as appointment setting, bank information requests, question-answering, and movie discussion. Natural human conversations are seldom limited in scope and jump from topic to topic, they are laced with metaphor and subtext and face-to-face communication is supplemented with non-verbal cues. Live improvised performance takes natural conversation one step further with multiple actors performing in front of an audience. In improvisation the topic of the conversation is often given by the audience several times during the performance. These suggestions inspire actors to perform novel, unique, and engaging scenes. During each scene, actors must make rapid fire decisions to collaboratively generate coherent narratives. We have embarked on a journey to perform live improvised comedy alongside artificial intelligence systems. We introduce Pyggy and A.L.Ex. (Artificial Language Experiment), the first two Artificial Improvisors, each with a unique composition and embodiment. This work highlights research and development, successes and failures along the way, celebrates collaborations enabling progress, and presents discussions for future work in the space of artificial improvisation.

Improvised Comedy as a Turing Test

The best improvisational theatre actors can make any scene partner, of any skill level or ability, appear talented and proficient in the art form, and thus "make them shine". To challenge this improvisational paradigm, we built an artificial intelligence (AI) trained to perform live shows alongside human actors for human audiences. Over the course of 30 performances to a combined audience of al...

Relative Comfort of People with Acting Robots by Theatre and Technology Experience

Robots of varying kinds are appearing with increasing frequency in all manner of staged theatrical productions (see [1] and [2] for examples). While the individual productions are often greeted with positive receptions from their audiences, it is difficult to determine how the general public may react to the very idea of robots on stage acting alongside humans. While robots are growing more cap...

Can Artificial Intelligences Suffer from Mental Illness? A Philosophical Matter to Consider

The potential for artificial intelligences and robotics in achieving the capacity of consciousness, sentience and rationality offers the prospect that these agents have minds. If so, then there may be a potential for these minds to become dysfunctional, or for artificial intelligences and robots to suffer from mental illness. The existence of artificially intelligent psychopathology can be inte...

Using Cognitive Tunnels in a New Approach to Building Social Elevators in the Information Society

We are on the verge of developing artificial intelligences that may dwarf the capabilities of human intelligence. How we will interact and thrive alongside such intelligence will be a pressing societal problem. This paper addresses the question of the intelligence of “artificial persons” (organisations of people) that already exist in our modern world. A particular issue – social exclusion from...

Cognitive psychology meets art: exploring creativity, language, and emotion through live musical improvisation in film and theatre

Creativity is primarily defined as a mental phenomenon that engages multiple cognitive processes to generate novel and useful solutions to problems. There are two core problem-solving modes: long-term deliberate methodical vs. short-term spontaneous. Despite behavioral models integrating the multiple activities (e.g. technical and financial issues, emotional responses) arising within and the so...
