Incorporating Visual Imagery into a Cognitive Architecture:
نویسندگان
چکیده
Humans use visual imagery for a variety of purposes including reasoning about visual properties and spatial relationships, anticipating future events, recalling past experiences, and memorizing concepts and facts. Cognitive architectures have traditionally ignored visual imagery, but we have started to explore this phenomenon in the context of Soar. Soar provides the underlying control, memory, and learning mechanisms while visual imagery provides efficient representations and processes for finding an object's visual features and spatial relationships not explicitly encoded with symbols. This multi-modal approach enables the architecture to use the most efficient representation for the appropriate computation and requires less domain knowledge for visual-spatial type environments and tasks. This paper outlines our theory and the corresponding architecture, design, and implementation. We present initial results in two small problem domains.

Towards Incorporating Visual Imagery into a Cognitive Architecture
This paper presents a synthesis of cognitive architecture and visual imagery. Visual imagery is a mental process that relies both on cognitive and perceptual mechanisms and is useful for tasks requiring visual-feature and visual-spatial reasoning. Using visual imagery as motivation, we have extended the Soar cognitive architecture to support the construction, transformation, generation, and ins...
متن کاملExtending Cognitive Architectures with Mental Imagery
Inspired by mental imagery, we present results of extending a symbolic cognitive architecture (Soar) with general computational mechanisms to support reasoning with symbolic, quantitative spatial, and visual depictive representations. Our primary goal is to achieve new capabilities by combining and manipulating these representations using specialized processing units specific to a modality but ...
متن کاملA Computational Account of Complex Mental Image Construction
This paper presents a computational cognitive model of the construction process of complex, i.e., multi-part, visual mental images. The model is integrated into the cognitive architecture Casimir. The construction process is realized by the interplay of a spatial working memory structure and a passive quasi-pictorial visual representation. Both structures are successively build up on demand fro...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Relationship between Visual Stimulus Quality and Idea Generating in Enhancing Creativity
"Design Idea" is very important in architectural education and a lot of research has been done in this field. In the ateliers, students are advised to look at and review a few examples of design-related issues before starting architectural design. The case of student sketching is a visual stimulus. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relationship between the quality of visual st...
متن کاملIncorporating Cognitive Linguistic Insights into Classrooms: the Case of Iranian Learners’ Acquisition of If-Clauses
Cognitive linguistics gives the most inclusive, consistent description of how language is organized, used and learned to date. Cognitive linguistics contains a great number of concepts that are useful to second language learners. If-clauses in English, on the other hand, remain intriguing for foreign language learners to struggle with, due to their intrinsic intricacies. EFL grammar books are ...
