چکیده

Sir, Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with topical application of 5aminolevulinic acid (ALA) has been successful in the treatment of super®cial non-melanoma skin tumours (1). When applied topically to the skin, ALA is absorbed into the epidermal cells and biosynthesized to the light-sensitive metabolite photoporphyrin IX (PpIX). When cells with accumulated PpIX are exposed to light of certain wavelengths, free radicals are released as singlet oxygen, leading to cell death (2). Recently it has been reported that ALA-PDT also has antiviral properties (3). Selective production of PpIX has been demonstrated by ̄uorescence measurements after ALA application to genital warts, indicating a speci®c af®nity for ALA in human papilloma virus infected tissue (4). A preliminary study showed that repetitive treatment with ALA and white light has a curative effect on recalcitrant verrucae (5). Encouraged by these results, we treated patients who were referred to our department with warts resistant to other treatments, with ALA-PDT.

Treatment of nongenital cutaneous warts.

Numerous treatments for nongenital cutaneous warts are available, although no single therapy has been established as completely curative. Watchful waiting is an option for new warts because many resolve spontaneously. However, patients often request treatment because of social stigma or discomfort. Ideally, treatment should be simple and inexpensive with low risk of adverse effects. Salicylic a...

Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Improving the Efficacy of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Induced Photodynamic Therapy

Introduction: The most important limitation of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA)-induced photodynamic therapy (PDT) is the efficacy of the cells in converting 5-ALA to protoporphyrin IX. The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with the photosensitivity at the surface plasmon resonance wavelength on 5-ALA-mediated PDT. Material and Methods: First of a...

Synergistic Cytotoxic Effect of Gold Nanoparticles and 5-Aminolevulinic Acid-Mediated Photodynamic Therapy against Skin Cancer Cells

Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising therapeutic modality for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. In this study, the epidermoid carcinoma cell line A431 and the normal fibroblasts were used to investigate whether gold nanoparticles (GNPs) can induce an increase in cell death during PDT using 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) as a photosensitizer. Methods: Human fibroblast an...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and waterfiltered infrared A (wIRA) in patients with recalcitrant common hand and foot warts

BACKGROUND Common warts (verrucae vulgares) are human papilloma virus (HPV) infections with a high incidence and prevalence, most often affecting hands and feet, being able to impair quality of life. About 30 different therapeutic regimens described in literature reveal a lack of a single striking strategy. Recent publications showed positive results of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5-aminole...
