چکیده

This paper presents a new numerical scheme for simulating multidimensional transient and steady-state microscale energy transport. The new method is based on the method of characteristics that follows heat carriers along their pathline. Unlike traditional methods, it uses a fixed computational grid and follows the heat carriers backward in time. The method 1) is accurate, 2) is unconditionally stable, 3) can deal with complex geometries without a large increase in computational cost, and 4) can be used for solving coupled equations using other numerical schemes. First, the numerical scheme is described. Then, simulations for transient and steady-state phonon transport in dielectric thin films are discussed. Numerical results are compared with analytical and reported numerical solutions and good agreement is obtained. @DOI: 10.1115/1.1795233#

Analysis of the Characteristics, Physical Concepts and Entropy Generation in a Turbulent Channel Flow Using Vortex Blob Method

In this paper, using vortex blob method (VBM), turbulent flow in a channel is studied and physical concepts of turbulence are obtained and discussed. At first, time-averaged velocities,  and , and then their fluctuations are calculated. To clarify turbulence structures, velocity fluctuations and  are plotted. It is observed that turbulence structures occupy different positions and move with con...

Damping and Frequency Shift in Microscale Modified Couple Stress Thermoelastic Plate Resonators

In this paper, the vibrations of thin plate in modified couple stress thermoelastic medium by using Kirchhoff- Love plate theory has been investigated. The governing equations of motion and heat conduction equation for Lord Shulman (L-S) [1] theory are written with the help of Kirchhoff- Love plate theory. The thermoelastic damping of micro-beam resonators is analyzed by using the normal mode a...

Modified method of characteristics in transient radiation transfer

This paper presents the modified method of characteristics for simulating multidimensional transient radiative transfer in emitting, absorbing and scattering media. The method is based on the method of characteristics that follows photons along their pathlines. It makes use of a fixed set of points, and unlike the conventional method of characteristics, it follows the photons backward in space....

Measurement of Heat Characteristics of a New Incubator with a Chemical Energy Source

A heat transfer model was developed for a new non-electric infant’s transport incubator. The source of heat comprises a super saturated solution of Sodium Acetate and a metal disk (activator) in a plastic container. Estimating the number of the chemical bags required for different ambient temperature was the goal. First the quantity of heat generated by the chemical was appointed through experi...

Identification of critical sediment source areas across the Gharesou watershed, Northeastern Iran, using hydrological modeling

In this study, the process-based watershed model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), was used for simulating hydrology and sediment transport in the Gharesou watershed and for identifying critical areas of soil erosion and water pollution. After model calibration and uncertainty analysis using SUFI-2 (Sequential Uncertainty Fitting, ver. 2) method, the outputs of the calibrated model were u...
