Characteristics of lateral heterogeneities with thermal and chemical origins in the pyrolitic lower mantle

چکیده
The relative changes between shear and compressional velocities (RSP = o ln VS/o ln VP), bulk sound and shear velocities (RCS = o ln VC/o ln VS), and density versus shear wave velocity (RqS = o ln q/o ln VS) in response to thermal and chemical variations were investigated for the pyrolitic lower mantle. For heterogeneities with thermal origins, RSP increases from 1.7 to 2.0 together with RqS decreasing from 0.4 to 0.2 and RCS = 0.27 from the top to the bottom of the lower mantle. In comparison, chemical variations (bulk iron or silica contents) are characterized by RSP < 1.5 and RCS > 0.5 at lower mantle depths. Negative values of RqS and RCS are indicative of chemical anomalies in the lower mantle, but a combination of thermal and chemical heterogeneities may be required to produce velocity and density anomalies at the magnitudes observed in seismic data. Further refinement of these characteristics requires data on the higher order pressure and temperature derivatives of the elastic moduli of the constituent phases. 2009 National Natural Science Foundation of China and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Implications of lower-mantle structural heterogeneity for existence and nature of whole-mantle plumes
Recent seismological studies demonstrate the presence of strong deep-mantle elastic heterogeneity and anisotropy, consistent with a dynamic environment having chemical anomalies, phase changes, and partially molten material. The implications for deep-mantle plume genesis are discussed in the light of the seismological findings. Nearly antipodal large low–shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the...

Mantle peridotites exposed in south Jazmourian comprise of lherzolite and porphyroclastic Cpx-bearing harzburgite in the lower part with chromitite lenses in the upper parts. Petrography and microprobe studies shows evidence of melt-peridotite interactions; post melting processes and subsolidus interactions, which has been associated with appearance of two generations of deformed primary pyroxe...

S U M M A R Y Lateral variations in mantle anelasticity (Q) are important for understanding the Earth’s thermal and chemical structure in the mantle. In the past decades, preliminary global 3-D tomographic Q models have been developed based upon the assumption that traveltime (phase delay) anomalies are due to the Earth’s elastic (velocity) structure whereas amplitude anomalies are dominated by...
متن کاملIn situ observations of phase transition between perovskite and CaIrO3-type phase in MgSiO3 and pyrolitic mantle composition
In situ observations of the perovskite–CaIrO3 phase transition in MgSiO3 and in pyrolitic compositions were carried out using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell interfaced with a synchrotron radiation source. For pure MgSiO3, the phase boundary between the orthorhombic Mg-perovskite and CaIrO3-type phases in the temperature range of 1300–3100 K was determined to be P (GPa)=130 (F3)+0.0070 (F0.00...
