چکیده

Over the past fewdecades, significant progress of assessing chemical transport in fractured rocks has been made in laboratory and field investigations as well as in mathematic modeling. In most of these studies, however, matrix diffusion on fracture–matrix surfaces is considered as a process of molecular diffusion only. Mathematical modeling based on this traditional concept often had problems in explaining or predicting tracer transport in fractured rock. In this article, we propose a new conceptual model of fracture-flow-enhanced matrix diffusion, which correlates with fracture-flow velocity. The proposed model incorporates an additional matrix-diffusion process, induced by rapid fluid flow along fractures. According to the boundary-layer theory, fracture-flow-enhanced matrix diffusion may dominate masstransfer processes at fracture–matrix interfaces, where rapid flow occurs through fractures. The new conceptual model can be easily integratedwith analytical solutions, as demonstrated in this article, and numerical models, as we foresee. The new conceptual model is preliminarily validated using laboratory experimental results from a series of tracer breakthrough tests with different velocities in a simple fracture system. Validating of the new model with field experiments in complicated fracture systems and numerical modeling will be explored in future research.

Stochastic analysis of solute transport in heterogeneous, dual-permeability media

[1] A Eulerian perturbation method is applied to study the influence of medium heterogeneity on nonreactive chemical transport in a saturated, fractured porous medium under steady state flow conditions. A dual-permeability model is used to describe the flow and solute transport in the fractured medium [Gerke and van Genuchten, 1993a, 1993b]. The model involves two overlaying continua at the mac...

Pore scale simulation of solute transport in fractured porous media

[1] We investigate the effects of the porosity (and thus permeability) of porous matrix and the fracture aperture on transport in fractured porous media. We do so with detailed lattice Boltzmann simulations on constructed porous media with a single fracture. Both plume spatial moments (the average plume velocity and the dispersion coefficients) and mass transfer coefficients between the facture...

Modelling flow and solute transport in fractured porous media

A BEM numerical model is presented for the flow and solute transport in fractured porous media, which is based on the dual reciprocity method multi domain scheme (DRM-MD). The model solves the 3D flow equation based on the Darcy law in the coupled system of porous media, fracture network and fracture intersections. Unlike the discrete fracture models, which for simplicity use Fick's law in the ...

Evaluation of Chloride and Pesticide Transport in a Fractured Clayey Till Using Large Undisturbed Columns and Numerical Modeling

Saturated groundwater flow and tracer experiments using fluorescent dye, chloride, and the herbicides mecoprop and simazine were carried out in the laboratory using three large-diameter (0.5 m) undisturbed columns of fractured clayey till. Hydraulic conductivity of the columns ranged from 10 -s m/s in the shallowest column (1 rn depth) to 10 -7 m/s in the deepest column (4 rn depth) and were si...

Continuous Time Random Walk Analysis of Solute Transport

8 9 The objective of this work is to discuss solute transport phenomena in fractured porous 10 media, where the macroscopic transport of contaminants in the highly permeable inter11 connected fractures can be strongly affected by solute exchange with the porous rock 12 matrix. We are interested in a wide range of rock types, with matrix hydraulic 13 conductivities varying from almost impermeabl...
