چکیده

zona pellucida contains receptors for a variety of plant lectins, glycoproteins that bind to specific saccharide determinants (Oikawa, Yanagimachi & Nicol¬ son, 1973; Oikawa, Nicolson & Yanagimachi, 1974; Nicolson, Yanagimachi & Yanagimachi, 1975). Some of these lectins can bind to the zona pellucida and induce egg agglutination and/or cause changes in the ability of the exterior region of the zona to scatter visible light (Oikawa et al., 1973, 1974; Oikawa, Nicolson & Yanagimachi, 1975). We report here that rodent eggs show speciesspecific differences in lectin-induced agglutination and light scattering proper¬ ties of their zonae pellucidae when treated with Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCAi), which recognizes /?-linked D-galactose residues (Nicolson & Blaustein, 1972; Nicolson & Lacorbier, 1973), or wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), which recognizes N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and sialic acid residues (Burger & Goldburg, 1967; Greenaway & LeVine, 1973). Unfertilized eggs of the golden hamster, rat (Fisher) and mouse (Swiss albino)

Histochemical detection of the lectin-binding carbohydrates in the zona pellucida during oocyte growth in the wild boar (Sus scrofa scrofa).

The changes that occur in the carbohydrate composition of zona pellucida glycoproteins during oocyte maturation in the wild-boar were studied using periodic-acid Schiff (PAS), High Iron Diamine (HID) and Low Iron Diamine (LID). Lectin staining was performed with a panel of 11 HRP-lectin conjugates combined with neuraminidase digestion and chemical treatments. There were few internal glucidic re...

Ultrastructural localization of lectin-binding sites on the zonae pellucidae and plasma membranes of mammalian eggs

Receptors for Ricinus communis agglutinin I (RCAI), concanavalin A (Con A), and wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) were localized on the zonae pellucidae and plasma membranes of hamster, mouse, and rat eggs with ferritin-lectin conjugates. Intact eggs labeled with the ferritin conjugates showed dense concentrations of RCAI and WGA receptors in the outermost regions of their zonae pellucidae and sparse...

Human sperm do not bind to rat zonae pellucidae despite the presence of four homologous glycoproteins.

The specificity of sperm-egg recognition in mammals is mediated primarily by the zona pellucida surrounding ovulated eggs. Mouse sperm are quite promiscuous and bind to human eggs, but human spermatozoa will not bind to mouse eggs. The mouse zona pellucida contains three glycoproteins, ZP1, ZP2, and ZP3, which are conserved in rat and human. The recent observation that human zonae pellucidae co...

Protein-carbohydrate interactions during fertilization.

Interaction between gametes during fertilization is at least in part regulated by carbohydrate moieties of the zona pellucida (ZP) and carbohydrate binding proteins of the sperm surface. This review focuses on the protein-carbohydrate interactions during the primary binding of the sperm to the ZP in different species. Synthesis, structure and composition of the ZP are summarized. The functional...

Binding of Sperm to the Zona Pellucida Mediated by Sperm Carbohydrate-Binding Proteins is not Species-Specific in vitro between Pigs and Cattle

Carbohydrates are candidates for the basis of species-selective interaction of gametes during mammalian fertilization. In this study, we sought to clarify the roles of sugar residues in the species-selective, sperm-oocyte interaction in pigs and cattle. Acrosome-intact porcine and bovine sperm exhibited their strongest binding affinities for β-Gal and α-Man residues, respectively. Porcine-sperm...
