چکیده

We present techniques for modifying a turbo decoder to incorporate a hidden Markov source model, a Markov channel model, or both. This allows the receiver to utilize the statistical characteristics of the source and/or channel during the decoding process, and leads to significantly improved performance relative to systems in which the Markov properties are not exploited. When applied for binary-input, binaryoutput Markov channels, the methods presented here outperform techniques based on conventional channel interleaving, as they can allow decoding at rates which are above the capacity of a memoryless channel with the same stationary bit error probability as the Markov channel.

Joint Source-Channel Coding with Unequal Error Protection using Asymmetric Turbo Codes

In this paper, we devise an efficient joint source-channel coding scheme for robust image transmission over noisy channels. We firstly present a novel interleaver, named unequal row column cyclic cross interleaver, which could improve the error correction capability of turbo codes effectively. Secondly, we devise two types of asymmetric turbo codes which consist of the parallel concatenated tur...

Joint Source and Channel Decoding for Variable Length Encoded Turbo Codes

Joint source and channel decoding (JSCD) has been proved to be an effective technique which can improve decoding performance by exploiting residual source redundancy. Most previous publications on this subject focus on a traditional coding scheme in which the source variable-length coding (VLC) is serially concatenated with a channel code. In this paper, a parallel concatenated coding scheme fo...

Joint Source-Channel Decoding of Variable-Length Codes with Soft Information: A Survey

Multimedia transmission over time-varying wireless channels presents a number of challenges beyond existing capabilities conceived so far for third-generation networks. Efficient quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia on these channels may in particular require a loosening and a rethinking of the layer separation principle. In that context, joint source-channel decoding (JSCD) str...

The Turbo Principle in Joint Source-Channel Coding

The turbo principle (iterative decoding between component decoders) is a general scheme, which we apply to joint source-channel decoding. As a realistic (e.g. speech parameter coding) example we discuss joint source-channel decoding for auto-correlated continuousamplitude source samples. At the transmitter the source samples are quantized and their indexes are appropriately mapped onto bitvecto...

The Turbo Principle in Joint Source Channel Decoding of Variable Length Codes

The ’turbo’ principle has been widely applied to various detection/decoding problems in recent years. Here we show how the general idea can be extended to a communication scheme where a variable length code is used for data compression followed by a channel code to protect the data against channel errors. Iterations are performed between the channel decoder and the decoder for the variable leng...

Soft and Joint Source-Channel Decoding of Quasi-Arithmetic Codes

The issue of robust and joint source-channel decoding of quasi-arithmetic codes is addressed. Quasi-arithmetic coding is a reduced precision and complexity implementation of arithmetic coding. This amounts to approximating the distribution of the source. The approximation of the source distribution leads to the introduction of redundancy that can be exploited for robust decoding in presence of ...
