چکیده

We have observed a quiescent small globule, the Thumbprint Nebula, with the ISOPHOT far-infrared camera at 100 and 200μm. The observed emission is optically thin thermal emission from dust at a temperature of ∼14–16 K. The energy budget of the cloud is studied by considering the energy input (interstellar radiation field, ISRF), and outputs (scattered and emitted radiation). It is found that the ISRF is sufficient to be the only heating source of dust in the cloud. We have derived values of absorption cross sections of dust at 100 and 200μm, and found them to be in good agreement with current dust models.

Far-infrared Emission from Dust in Normal Galaxies

We review the morphological and spectral energy distribution characteristics of the dust continuum emission (emitted in the 40-200μm spectral range) from normal galaxies, as revealed by detailed ISOPHOT mapping observations of nearby spirals and by ISOPHOT observations of the integrated emissions from representative statistical samples in the local universe.

ISO continuum observations of quasars at z = 1 - 4 ⋆ I . Spectral energy distributions of quasars from the UV to far - infrared

Eight luminous quasars with −30 < MB < −27 at z = 1.4 3.7 have been observed in the midand far-infrared using ISO. All the quasars have been detected in the mid-infrared bands of ISOCAM, while no far-infrared detections have been made with ISOPHOT. SEDs (Spectral Energy Distributions) from the UV to far-infrared have been obtained while supplementing ISO observations with photometry in the opti...

Normal Gas-Rich Galaxies in the Far-Infrared: The Legacy of ISOPHOT

Following on from IRAS, the ISOPHOT instrument on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) has provided a huge advancement in our knowledge of the phenomenology of the far-infrared (FIR) emission of normal galaxies and the underlying physical processes. Highlights include: the discovery of an extended cold dust emission component, present in all types of gas-rich galaxies and carrying the bul...

The initial conditions of isolated star formation . V : ISOPHOT imaging and the temperatures and energy balance of pre - stellar cores

ISO data taken with the long-wavelength imaging photo-polarimeter ISOPHOT are presented of 18 pre-stellar cores at three far-infrared wavelengths – 90, 170 & 200 μm. Most of the cores are detected clearly at 170 and 200 μm, but only one is detected strongly at 90 μm, indicating that mostly they are very cold, with typical temperatures of only ∼10–20 K. Colour temperature images are constructed ...

Asteroids as far-infrared photometric standards for ISOPHOT

Asteroids are used as far-IR calibrators for the imaging photopolarimeter ISOPHOT on board the Infrared Space Observatory ISO. For the 10 selected objects we compiled a large uniform database1 of 678 individual observations, ranging from 7–2 000μm. Applying a new thermophysical model to the observations we derived thermal properties of the selected asteroids, based on spin-vector solutions, dir...
