چکیده

Supramolecular self-assembly provides ameans of achieving “bottom-up” fabrication of nanoscalematerials. Theirmechanical properties and functionality arise from the assembly of relatively simple molecular building blocks. These materials have selective affinity to different interfaces, high capacity for interfacial adsorption, nanostructure, and spontaneous formation of unique nano-self-assemblies which exhibit remarkable simplicity and biocompatibility. Due to these attractive features, supramolecular nanostructures, particularly peptide-based, have recently been explored as effective nanomaterials in applications ranging from controlled release and drug delivery, nano-fabrication, skin care, biomineralization, sensing, antimicrobial materials, and tissue engineering. This range of applications is facilitated by the diverse primary sequences of the short peptides, which can be either biomimetic or de novo designed. Thus, their self-assembling mechanistic processes and nanostructures also vary enormously. This chapter highlights recent advances in studying self-assembled peptide systems, focusing on the formation of different nanostructures and their applications in diverse fields.

Electrospinning Bioactive Supramolecular Polymers from Water

Electrospinning is a high-throughput, low-cost technique for manufacturing long fibers from solution. Conventionally, this technique is used with covalent polymers with large molecular weights. We report here the electrospinning of functional peptide-based supramolecular polymers from water at very low concentrations (<4 wt %). Molecules with low molecular weights (<1 kDa) could be electrospun ...

Supramolecular polymerization from polypeptide-grafted comb polymers.

The helical and tubular structures self-assembled from proteins have inspired scientists to design synthetic building blocks that can be "polymerized" into supramolecular polymers through coordinated noncovalent interactions. However, cooperative supramolecular polymerization from large, synthetic macromolecules remains a challenge because of the difficulty of controlling the structure and inte...

Multivalent Protein Assembly Using Monovalent Self-Assembling Building Blocks

Discotic molecules, which self-assemble in water into columnar supramolecular polymers, emerged as an alternative platform for the organization of proteins. Here, a monovalent discotic decorated with one single biotin was synthesized to study the self-assembling multivalency of this system in regard to streptavidin. Next to tetravalent streptavidin, monovalent streptavidin was used to study the...

Anisotropic Self-Assembly of Supramolecular Polymers and Plasmonic Nanoparticles at the Liquid–Liquid Interface

The study of supramolecular polymers in the bulk, in diluted solution, and at the solid-liquid interface has recently become a major topic of interest, going from fundamental aspects to applications in materials science. However, examples of supramolecular polymers at the liquid-liquid interface are mostly unexplored. Here, we describe the supramolecular polymerization of triarylamine molecules...

Aqueous interfacial gels assembled from small molecule supramolecular polymers

The self-assembly of a stimuli-responsive aqueous supramolecular hyperbranched polymer from small molecules is reported. This system is composed of ditopic and tritopic guest-functionalised molecules that are able to form heteroternary supramolecular complexes with the macrocyclic host cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). We demonstrate that the supramolecular hyperbranched polymer formed is responsive to ...
