چکیده
In this paper, the parallelization of the H.261 video coding algorithm on the IBM SP2® multiprocessor system is described. The effect of parallelizing computations and communications in the spatial, temporal, and both spatial-temporal domains are considered through the study of frame rate, speedup, and implementation efficiency, which are modeled and measured with respect to the number of nodes ( ) and parallel methods used. Four parallel algorithms were developed, of which the first two exploited the spatial parallelism in each frame, and the last two exploited both the temporal and spatial parallelism over a sequence of frames. The two spatial algorithms differ in that one utilizes a single communication master, while the other attempts to distribute communications across three masters. On the other hand, the spatial-temporal algorithms use a pipeline structure for exploiting the temporal parallelism together with either a single master or multiple masters. The best median speedup (frame rate) achieved was close to 15 [15 frames per second (fps)] for 352 240 video on 24 nodes, and 13 (37 fps) for QCIF video, by the spatial algorithm with distributed communications. For 10, the single-master spatial algorithm performs better with efficiency up to 90%, while the multiple-master spatial algorithm is superior for 10, with efficiency up to 70%. The spatial-temporal algorithms achieved average speedup performance, but are most scalable for large .

Adaptive Spectral Separation Two Layer Coding with Error Concealment for Cell Loss Resilience
This paper addresses the issue of cell loss and its consequent effect on video quality in a packet video system, and examines possible compensative measures. In the system's enconder, adaptive spectral separation is used to develop a two-layer coding scheme comprising a high priority layer to carry essential video data and a low priority layer with data to enhance the video image. A two-step er...
متن کاملParallelization of a H.263 Encoder for the TMS320C80 MVP
The coding of digital video sequences has been paid increasing attention over the past few years. Algorithms and standards such as MPEG1, MPEG2 or H.261 have been developed allowing more and more compression. A new standard in this field is H.263 which has been recently adopted by the ITU. It is intended for videoconferencing, videophoning, surveillance and other low bit rate applications (belo...
متن کاملAn Efficient Adaptive Boundary Matching Algorithm for Video Error Concealment
Sending compressed video data in error-prone environments (like the Internet and wireless networks) might cause data degradation. Error concealment techniques try to conceal the received data in the decoder side. In this paper, an adaptive boundary matching algorithm is presented for recovering the damaged motion vectors (MVs). This algorithm uses an outer boundary matching or directional tempo...
متن کاملA Novel Temporal-Frequency Domain Error Concealment Method for Motion Jpeg
Motion-JPEG is a common video format for compression of motion images with highquality using JPEG standard for each frame of the video. During transmission through a noisychannel some blocks of data are lost or corrupted, and the quality of decompression frames decreased. In this paper, for reconstruction of these blocks, several temporal-domain, spatial-domain, andfrequency-domain error conceal...
متن کاملModel-based Multi-view Video Compression Using Distributed Source Coding Principles
Transmission of video data from multiple sensors over a wireless network requires enormous amount of bandwidth, and could easily overwhelm the system. However, by exploiting the redundancy between the video data collected by different cameras, in addition to the inherent temporal and spatial redundancy within each video sequence, the required bandwidth can be significantly reduced. Well-establi...
