How do offenders choose where to offend? Perspectives from animal foraging

چکیده
Purpose. Research suggests that offender spatial decision-making is not random. However, little is known about if or how offences in a series influence where an offender will target next. Drawing on concepts and empirical findings from environmental criminology and the ecology literature, in this article I considerwhat spatial patternsmight be expected in the sequential crimes committed by serial offenders and provide an empirical example.

Judiciary views on criminal behaviour and intention of offenders with high-functioning autism
PURPOSE The purpose of this paper is to explore how judges perceive High Functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorders (hfASDs) and the disorders' effects on an offender's ability to formulate criminal intent and control behaviour. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH Semi-structured interviews on topics related to offenders with hfASDs were conducted with 21 California Superior Court Judges. A coding schem...
متن کاملThe prevention of childhood sexual abuse.
David Finkelhor examines initiatives to prevent child sexual abuse, which have focused on two primary strategies--offender management and school-based educational programs. Recent major offender managment initiatives have included registering sex offenders, notifying communities about their presence, conducting background employment checks, controlling where offenders can live, and imposing lon...
متن کاملMoving From the Neighborhood to the Cellblock: The Impact of Youth’s Neighborhoods on Prison Misconduct
This study examines how prior neighborhood characteristics affect youth’s offending when youths move into an incarceration context. Neighborhood ethnic heterogeneity, residential stability, and disadvantage are often predictive of neighborhood crime, but it is unclear how these neighborhood constructs continue to affect youth’s behavior inside a secure facility. In a sample of recently incarcer...
متن کاملVictims and Offenders: Accounts of Paybacks, Invulnerability, and Financial Gain among Homeless Youth
Previous research has suggested that “victim” and “offender” are not mutually exclusive categories but rather represent a homogeneous pool in which offenders are victimized and victims also offend. Little is known, however, about the specifics of the victim and offender process. The current study formally addresses the following research questions: why are some individuals at higher risk for vi...
متن کاملKnowledge of resources and competitors in human foraging
How do groups of people allocate themselves to resources? Do people, like many other animal species (Fretwell & Lucas, 1970), distribute themselves so as to cover resources in an approximately optimal fashion? In this work, we were particularly interested in the role of knowledge in influencing group foraging behavior. We manipulated two types of information that animals might use in determinin...
