Adrenal incidentalomas: a disease of modern technology.

چکیده
The adrenal âincidentalomaâ (AI) is an adrenal tumour greater than 1cm in diameter that is discovered incidentally during a radiologic examination performed for indications other than an evaluation of adrenal disease. 1,2,5,11,12 It is typically found on a CT scan done for other purposes and frequently causes much grief to the clinician who is unsure how to act upon the finding. Most AIs are benign, non-secretory, and of no clinical significance but a minority are (or have the potential to become) functional and/or malignant. For this reason the discovery of an adrenal incidentaloma should trigger a cascade of investigations. In this article, we review the most appropriate approach to dealing with this increasingly common and frequently frustrating entity.

Incidentally discovered adrenal masses (adrenal incidentalomas) found during radiological procedures are a by-product of modern-day medicine. Incidental findings of such adrenal masses pose uncertainties and dilemmas in evaluation and management. متن کاملCurrent Management of Adrenal Incidentalomas
Adrenal “incidentalomas” refer to a group of adrenal masses initially discovered during cross-sectional imaging obtained for other clinical reasons. The majority of incidentalomas are benign nonfunctional adrenal adenomas and can be safely managed expectantly. A subset of adrenal incidentalomas, however, are functional and/or malignant, and these lesions most often require adrenalectomy. The fo...
متن کاملINVITED REVIEW Prevalence and natural history of adrenal incidentalomas
Clinically silent adrenal masses discovered by imaging studies performed for unrelated reasons, i.e. adrenal incidentalomas, have become a rather common finding in clinical practice. However, only limited studies of incidence, prevalence, and natural history of adrenal incidentalomas are available. A comprehensive review of the literature shows the prevalence of adrenal incidentalomas to be 2.3...
