14 C-glucose oxidation in whole blood: a clinical assay for phagocyte dysfunction.

چکیده
A screening test for chronic granulomatous disease is described; it is based on abnormal oxidation of glucose-1-(14)C to (14)CO(2) during phagocytosis by leukocytes in whole blood.

Functional Analysis of Phagocyte Activity in Whole Blood from HIV/Tuberculosis-Infected Individuals Using a Novel Flow Cytometry-Based Assay
The accurate assessment of immune competence through ex vivo analysis is paramount to our understanding of those immune mechanisms that lead to protection or susceptibility against a broad range of human pathogens. We have developed a flow cytometry-based, whole blood phagocyte functional assay that utilizes the inflammatory inducer zymosan, coupled to OxyBURST-SE, a fluorescent reporter of pha...
متن کاملRadiation protection properties of Myrtus communis against oxidation caused by whole-body exposure of mice
Introduction: Exposure to ionizing radiation can be through direct hit or water radiolysis lead to oxidation in biological systems. In this study, the protective effect of Myrtus Communis aqueous extract on structural changes and oxidative stress in red blood cells and plasma proteins was examined after receipt of ionizing radiation. Materials and Methods: wis...
متن کاملLipid Profiles and Lipid Oxidation in Type 2 Diabetic Patients with Good Glycemic Control
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of good glycemic control on serum lipids levels and lipid peroxidation, and to find out the relationship between the level of malondialdehyde and HbA1c in type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty type 2 diabetic patients aged 40-60 years with the history of diabetes for more than 10 years were studied. Glycemic control was stable...
متن کاملInteraction of Fatty Acid and Glucose Oxidation by Cultured Heart Cells
Chick embryo heart cells in tissue culture actively oxidize [1-(14)C]palmitate to (14)CO(2). Fatty acid oxidation by cell monolayers was linear with time and increasing protein concentration. The addition of carnitine to the assay medium resulted in a 30-70% increase in the rate of fatty acid oxidation. The specific activity of palmitic acid oxidation did not change significantly with time in c...
متن کاملAnalytic review: disorders of phagocyte function.
R ECENT CLINICAL AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS have led to the description of a group of syndromes related to impaired bactericidal functions of neutrophils and monocytes.13 Although the pathophysiology of this group of disorders is unknown, detailed immunologic, biochemical and morphologic studies have elucidated some clues to the basic defects leading to impairment of phagocyte function. The ...
