Mycobacterium fortuitum infection following neck liposuction: A case report.

چکیده
MYCOBACTERIUM FORTUITUM is considered a ubiquitous, rapidly growing atypical mycobacterium readily isolated from soil, water, domestic and wild animals, milk, and foods. 1 Although originally believed to be a saprophyte, M. fortuitum has become rarely associated with human infections. Most commonly, reported clinical infections are postsurgical, cutaneous, or pulmonary. 2 The rise in clinical significance and awareness of disease caused by this atypical mycobacterium may be partly attributed to improved laboratory identification of mycobacteria, as well as an increasing population of susceptible immunocompromised individuals. This report describes a case of cutaneous infection with M. fortuitum following neck liposuction, which to the authors’ knowledge has not been reported to date.

Mycobacterium fortuitum abdominal wall abscesses following liposuction
We describe here a case of abdominal abscesses due to Mycobacterium fortuitum following liposuction. The abscesses developed three months after the procedure and diagnosis was delayed for five months. The clues for diagnosis were persistent pus discharge in spite of broad spectrum antibiotics and failure to grow any organisms on routine culture. This condition has been rarely reported; however,...
متن کاملAn unusual case of a cervical mass due to nontuberculous mycobacterium fortuitum infection.
Mycobacterium fortuitum, of the class of nontuberculous mycobacteria, rarely causes cervical lymphadenopathy and head and neck masses. However, we treated a woman with a neck mass that was indeed caused by a mycobacterial infection. Our case is unique in that prompt recognition of the infection and treatment with antimicrobials averted surgery. Generally, both antibiotics and surgery are recomm...

INTRODUCTION Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rapidly growing group of nontuberculous mycobacteria more common in patients with genetic or acquired causes of immune deficiency. There have been few published reports of Mycobacterium fortuitum associated with breast infections mainly associated with breast implant and reconstructive surgery. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of a 51-year-old Cauca...
متن کاملCutaneous infection with Mycobacterium fortuitum: an unusual presentation.
Cutaneous infection with rapidly growing mycobacteria is uncommon and its diagnosis can be missed unless there is strong clinical suspicion coupled with microbiological confirmation. We report a case of localized recurrent soft tissue swelling of the foot by Mycobacterium fortuitum in a healthy adult male. The case is being reported for its uncommon clinical presentation and the associated etio...
