چکیده

We have derived new abundances of the rare-earth elements Pr, Dy, Tm, Yb, and Lu for the solar photosphere and for five very metal-poor, neutron-capture r-process-rich giant stars. The photospheric values for all five elements are in good agreement with meteoritic abundances. For the low metallicity sample, these abundances have been combined with new Ce abundances from a companion paper, and reconsideration of a few other elements in individual stars, to produce internally-consistent Ba, rare-earth, and Hf (56 ≤ Z ≤ 72) element distributions. These have been used in a critical comparison between stellar and solar r-process abundance mixes. Subject headings: atomic data – Sun: abundances – stars: abundances – stars: Population II – stars: individual (CS 22829-052, CS 31082-001, HD 115444, HD 221170, BD+17 3248)

Hubble Space Telescope Observations of Heavy Elements in Metal-poor Galactic Halo Stars

We present new abundance determinations of neutron-capture elements Ge, Zr, Os, Ir, and Pt in a sample of 11 metal-poor ( 3:1 1⁄2Fe/H 1:6) Galactic halo giant stars, based on Hubble Space Telescope UVand Keck I optical high-resolution spectroscopy. The stellar sample is dominated by r-process–rich stars such as the well-studied CS 22892 052 and BD +17 3248 but also includes the r-process–poor, ...

IMPROVED ATOMIC DATA FOR HO ii AND NEW HOLMIUM ABUNDANCES FOR THE SUN AND THREE METAL-POOR STARS

Improved energy levels and hyperfine structure constants for a selected set of Ho ii levels were measured from spectra recorded Q1 using the 1 m Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) at the US National Solar Observatory. Branching fractions for the strong blue-UV lines from these levels were also measured from the FTS data and combined with earlier radiative lifetimes from time-resolved laser-in...

r-Process Abundance Signatures in Metal-Poor Halo Stars

Abundance observations indicate the presence of rapid-neutron capture (i.e., r-process) elements in old Galactic halo and globular cluster stars. Recent observations of the r-process-enriched star BD+17◦3248 include new abundance determinations for the neutron-capture elements Cd I (Z=48), Lu II (Z = 71) and Os II (Z = 76), the first detections of these elements in metal-poor r-process-enriched...

Galactic Cosmochronometry from Radioactive Elements in the Spectra of Very Old Metal-poor Stars

In a short review of neutron-capture elemental abundances in Galactic halo stars, emphasis is placed on the use of these elements to estimate the age of the Galactic halo. Two prominent characteristics of neutron-capture elements in halo stars are their large star-to-star scatter in the overall abundance level with respect to lighter elements, and the dominance of r-process abundance patterns a...

β-Decay Half-Lives of 110 Neutron-Rich Nuclei across the N=82 Shell Gap: Implications for the Mechanism and Universality of the Astrophysical r Process.

The β-decay half-lives of 110 neutron-rich isotopes of the elements from _{37}Rb to _{50}Sn were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. The 40 new half-lives follow robust systematics and highlight the persistence of shell effects. The new data have direct implications for r-process calculations and reinforce the notion that the second (A≈130) and the rare-earth-element (A≈160) abund...
