چکیده

Background Due to the industrial significance, elongational viscosity of polymeric liquids has been widely investigated. In particular, strain hardening, which is the deviation of the elongational viscosity from the linear viscoelastic envelope, has been of industrial and scientific interest because polymeric liquids exhibiting strain hardening are suitable for processing technologies with elongational flow such as fiber spinning, film blowing, blow molding, foaming, etc. [1, 2]. Münstedt [3] measured the uniaxial viscosity for polystyrene melts to report that the strain hardening is intensified when the molecular weight distribution is broadened. Minegishi et al. [4] demonstrated that the small amount of long chain component added to the short chain matrix effectively enhances the strain hardening. Further, Nielsen et al. [5] performed the experiments for the bidispersed polystyrene melts that are mixture of long and short molecules with narrow molecular weight distribution for each. They showed that the steady state viscosity ηE(ε̇) is significantly larger than the Trouton’s viscosity 3η0 for the bidispersed samples. Abstract

Elongational Viscosity of Monodisperse and Bidisperse Polystyrene Melts

The startup and steady uniaxial elongational viscosity have been measured for two monodisperse polystyrene melts with molecular weights of 52 kg/mole and 103 kg/mole, and for three bidisperse polystyrene melts. The monodisperse melts show a maximum in the steady elongational viscosity vs. the elongational rate, ǫ̇, of about two times 3η0 whereas the bidisperse melts have a maximum of up to a fac...

Nonlinear shear and elongational rheology of model polymer melts at low strain rates

We present new results for the low strain rate behavior of the steady-state planar shear and elongational viscometric functions of model polymer elts, computed by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. The chain lengths in our model polymer melts vary from N = 2 up to = 100 beads, the maximum value corresponding to approximately 57 Kuhn lengths (approximately equivalent to polyethylene...

Quantifying chain reptation in entangled polymer melts: topological and dynamical mapping of atomistic simulation results onto the tube model.

The topological state of entangled polymers has been analyzed recently in terms of primitive paths which allowed obtaining reliable predictions of the static (statistical) properties of the underlying entanglement network for a number of polymer melts. Through a systematic methodology that first maps atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) trajectories onto time trajectories of primitive chains and t...

Molecular dynamics simulation of planar elongational flow at constant pressure and constant temperature.

Molecular dynamics simulations of liquid systems under planar elongational flow have mainly been performed in the NVT ensemble. However, in most material processing techniques and common experimental settings, at least one surface of the fluid is kept in contact with the atmosphere, thus maintaining the sample in the NpT ensemble. For this reason, an implementation of the Nose-Hoover integral-f...

Microscopic models of complex fluids in nonequilibrium

The method of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) is used to simulate microscopic models of macromolecular fluids in flow situations. Procedures to extract rheological properties, such as the (non-newtonian) viscosity, normal pressure differences as well as information on flow induced structural changes, are discussed. This contribution focusses on polymer melts and polymer solutions, liqu...
