Evidence for the uptake of sucrose intact into sugarcane internodes.

چکیده
Application of [(14)C]fructosyl sucrose was used to determine whether sucrose cleavage was necessary for sucrose uptake by sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) internode tissue. Although approximately 25% of (14)C in the apoplast was present as fructose, indicating some sucrose cleavage, less than 15% of the label was randomized in the sucrose that remained in the tissue after a 30 minute osmoticum rinse. This is insufficient to support cleavage and resynthesis as the sole sucrose transport scheme. The lack of randomization of label between the glucose and fructose moieties of the sucrose molecule was taken as presumptive evidence that sucrose does not have to be cleaved prior to uptake by parenchyma cells in sugarcane internode tissue.

Investigation of the Impact of Eldana Saccharina (lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on Sugarcane Yield in Field Trials in Zululand
Through a joint SASEX/CIRAD, project the effect of Eldana saccharina Walker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) damage on stalk yield components was studied in fields at the SASEX farms at Gingindlovu and Empangeni. The formal experiment design consisted of randomised plots to compare natural infestation, artificial infestation and chemical treatments. Damaged stalks from infested plots had lower sucrose,...
متن کاملSucrose Metabolism in the Culm of Transgenic Sugarcane with Reduced Soluble Acid Invertase Activity
Transgenic derivatives of sugarcane cultivar Q117, with reduced acid invertase activity, were used to investigate the role of this enzyme in sucrose metabolism in the sugarcane culm. Despite more than 70% reduction in the level of acid invertase activity in the immature internodes, no significant changes in either sucrose load or purity were evident. Radiolabelling experiments indicated no sign...
متن کاملSugarcane transgenics expressing MYB transcription factors show improved glucose release
BACKGROUND Sugarcane, a tropical C4 perennial crop, is capable of producing 30-100 tons or more of biomass per hectare annually. The lignocellulosic residue remaining after sugar extraction is currently underutilized and can provide a significant source of biomass for the production of second-generation bioethanol. RESULTS MYB31 and MYB42 were cloned from maize and expressed in sugarcane with...
متن کاملEthylene-induced transcriptional and hormonal responses at the onset of sugarcane ripening
The effects of ethephon as a sugarcane ripener are attributed to ethylene. However, the role of this phytohormone at the molecular level is unknown. We performed a transcriptome analysis combined with the evaluation of sucrose metabolism and hormone profiling of sugarcane plants sprayed with ethephon or aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG), an ethylene inhibitor, at the onset of ripening. The differen...
متن کاملنحوه و میزان ز یان کرم ساقه خوار Sesamia cretica به نیشکر در منطقه خوزستان
Field studies of S. cretica Led. damage and potential crop losses on two important cultivars of sugarcane, NCo 310 and CP 57-614, were carried out in southern Khuzestan in 1998-1999. CP 57-614 showed greater mean percentage of bored nodes and internodes (20.7%) than NCo 310 (11-2%). Apart from the direct losses in cane weight (cane yield) due to boring from the larvae, cane juice quality is als...
