Lexical decision and semantic categorization: age of acquisition effects with students and elderly participants

چکیده

Age of acquisition (AoA) effects have often been found in a large variety of tasks involving word processing. One of the ongoing discussions remains the confounding of AoA effects with word frequency (e.g. Morrison & Ellis, 1995). In this study we removed possible frequency confounds by comparing AoA and word familiarity differences with young and older participants. A lexical decision experiment was conducted to test if reaction time (RT) differences of both age groups might be explained by differences in AoA of the words. Previous research (Brysbaert, Van Wijnendaele, & De Deyne, 2000) has shown that AoA effects might also have a semantic origin, apart from proposed origins at the word output or word form access level. To further test this hypothesis we adapted the lexical decision procedure to become a semantic categorization task.

Acquisition of English Prenominal and Postnominal Genitives

This study examined the acquisition of prenominal and postnominal genitives by Iranian EFL learners. Two variables were considered: possessive categories and language proficiency. We considered the influence of possessive categories such as lexical modifier, semantic relationship, and weight and syntactic complexity on genitive alternations by Iranian EFL learners. Also, we examined whether the...

Preferred Lexical Access Route in Persian Learners of English: Associative, Semantic or Both

Background: Words in the Mental Lexicon (ML) construct semantic field through associative and/ or semantic connections, with a pervasive native speaker preference for the former. Non-native preferences, however, demand further inquiry. Previous studies have revealed inconsistent Lexical Access (LA) patterns due to the limitations in the methodology and response categorization. Objectives: To f...

What causes the effect of age of acquisition in lexical processing?

Three hypotheses for effects of age of acquisition (AoA) in lexical processing are compared: the cumulative frequency hypothesis (frequency and AoA both influence the number of encounters with a word, which influences processing speed), the semantic hypothesis (early-acquired words are processed faster because they are more central in the semantic network), and the neural network model (early-a...

Dynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach

Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...

The Effect of Interaction on Lexical Acquisition

This research showed that appropriate input and suitable contexts for interaction among students can lead to successful  second language acquisition (SLA). This study based on Swain's (2005) notion of collaborative dialogue, aimed to study whether EFL learners participating in negotiation of meaning based tasks collaborate with each other and, if so, to investigate the role of this behavior in ...
