A Vlasov Code Simulation of the Amplification of Seed Pulses by Brillouin Backscattering in Plasmas

چکیده
We use an Eulerian Vlasov code to study the problem of the amplification of seed pulses by Brillouin backscattering in the strong-coupling regime. In this process, there is an energy transfer, mediated by a resonant ion wave, from a long, high energy pump electromagnetic wave, to an initially counter-propagating ultra-short seed pulse. The code solves the onedimensional Vlasov-Maxwell set of equations, and has been previously used to study the problem of the plasma-based backward Raman amplification of seed pulses in underdense plasmas [1], and the problem of the Brillouin backscattering amplification of seed pulses in overdense plasma in the strong coupling regime [2]. In the example we present here, we use the parameters which have been used in [2], but we increase the plasma amplifier length from the value of 1000 / pe c to 1600 / pe c , which is the length used in the PIC

Laser pulse compression and amplification via Raman backscattering in plasma
A simple theoretical model is proposed for the interaction between two counter-propagating laser pulses (a pump and a seed pulse) in unmagnetized plasma. Pulse compression and amplification are observed via numerical simulation. A one dimensional fluid model for stimulated Raman backscattering is proposed to investigate the pulse compression and pulse amplification mechanisms. To accomplish thi...
متن کاملRaman amplification of ultrashort laser pulses in microcapillary plasmas.
Experimental evidences of Raman amplification of ultrashort pulses in microcapillary plasmas are presented. The amplification of 100-500 fs pulses was investigated in microcapillaries with different lengths. The experimental data, together with simulation results, indicate that the resonance condition for Raman amplification in high-density plasma, n(e) approximately 1-3x10(20) cm(-3), existed ...
متن کاملCompression of powerful x-ray pulses to attosecond durations by stimulated Raman backscattering in plasmas.
Backward Raman amplification (BRA) in plasmas holds the potential for longitudinal compression and focusing of powerful x-ray pulses. In principle, this method is capable of producing pulse intensities close to the vacuum breakdown threshold by manipulating the output of planned x-ray sources. The minimum wavelength limit of BRA applicability to compression of laser pulses in plasmas is found.

Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is studied in plasmas relevant to inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The Eulerian Vlasov-Maxwell code ELVIS was developed and run for this purpose. Plasma waves are heavily Landau damped in the regimes of interest, and coupled-mode theory predicts back-scattered SRS is a convective instability. Simulations in a finite length, homogeneous plasma show electron tr...

Coupled theoretical and computational work is presented aimed at understanding and modeling stimulated Raman backscattering (SRBS) relevant to laser-plasma interactions (LPIs) in large-scale, nearly homogeneous plasmas. With the aid of a new code for simulating and studying the nonlinear coupling in space-time of a large number of modes, and a fluid Vlasov-Maxwell code for studying the evolutio...
