Jadxj Nath Bose, a resident of Entally, aged 47 years, was attacked, on the night of -5th February, 1868, with langcur, followed by chilliness, fever, and pain of an acute lancinating nature, very deeply seated, in the right hypochondrium. The patient soon after received a dose of compound jalap powder with calomel, by which his bowels were freely moved four times, but without any effect on the pain ; on the contrary, the latter began to increase, and soon became insufferable. Percussion over the painful region did not elicit much dulness. The case appearing of a suspicious character, I called in Baboo Doorga Churn Banerjee, who diagnosed that the liver was enlarged, and that there was acute inflammation in that organ. By his advice, a dozen leeches were applied, and quinine administered in anti-periodic doses, but the pain and fever continued as before. A blister was then applied by his advice ; but this also proved ineffectual. The fever increased, and fits of shivering, amounting to rigors, supervened; copious night sweats, with troublesome delirium and watchfulness, then came on. Within
