Stjernholm, Rune L. (Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio) and Frank Flanders. Metabolism of d-ribose-1-C(14) and C(14)-labeled d-gluconate in an enzyme system of the genus Propionibacterium. J. Bacteriol. 84:563-568. 1962.-Ribose-1-C(14) and potassium gluconate labeled in different positions were incubated with cell-free extracts of Propionibacterium shermanii. The resulting propionate, acetate, and succinate were isolated and the C(14) distribution determined by degradation. It is proposed that the extensive randomization observed is caused by the conversion of the labeled substrates to fructose-6-phosphate via the transketolase-transaldolase sequence followed by the Embden-Meyerhof pathway, and that the triosephosphates produced by these metabolic routes are metabolized via pyruvate to succinate and propionate.

Fraction of glucose catabolized via the Embden-Meyerhof pathway: alloxan-diabetic and fasted rats.

From the radiochemical yields of COZ and of fatty acids obtained when liver slices of normal rats are incubated with various specifically labeled precursors, it has been estimated (1) that about 50 per cent of the glucose molecules catabolized enter the Embden-Meyerhof sequence and the remainder follow an alternative pathway which is very similar or identical with the phosphogluconate oxidation...

The metabolism of ring-labeled L-thyroxine-C14 in vivo.

In the past, investigators have used thyroxine labeled either with JIP" in the 3',5'-position or with C14 in the carboxyl position to study the metabolism of thyroxine in vivo. Although these studies have yielded much valuable information, our knowledge about the metabolic fate of the ring structure in thyroxine is incomplete because both the 3'5'-IJ13 and the carboxyl-C14 are rapidly removed f...

Metabolism of Vitamin D. I. Preparation of Radioactive Vitamin D and Its Intestinal Absorption in the Rat.

Vitamin D has been called "the most dominating single factor in the regulation of the absorption of calcium" (1). Although experiments with segments of small intestine in vitro have demonstrated that the vitamin is required to maintain an active transport mechanism for calcium in the mucosa (2-4), the molecular events underlying the action remain unknown. To define them, detailed information on...

The Role of R&D in Trade Expansion: A Semi-parametric Gravity Specification for East and West Asia

In more recent years, it has become increasingly recognized that R&D (research and development) is a key driver of economic growth, a source of innovation and change, and as such stimulates improvements in productivity and economic competitiveness. It is closely associated with knowledge and flexibility, two factors that have gained new significance as a source of competitiveness in an increasi...

Studies on fluorinated pyrimidines. V. Effects on nucleic acid metabolism in vitro.

To gain further information on the mechanisms by which the fluorinated pyrimidines and their nucleosides inhibit various processes of nucleic acid biosynthesis, studies similar to those re ported in the preceding paper (6) were carried out in vitro in glycolyzing suspensions of the Ehrlich ascites cells system used by LePage for studies of purine biosynthesis (20). In this work the following la...
