Modeling Argumentation with Labeled Deduction: Formalization and Theoretical Considerations

چکیده

In the last years there has been an increasing demand of a variety of logical systems, prompted mostly by applications of logic in AI, logic programming and other related areas. Labeled Deductive Systems (LDS) were developed as a °exible methodology to formalize such a kind of complex logical systems. During the last decade defeasible argumentation has proven to be a con°uence point for many approaches to formalizing commonsense reasoning. Di®erent formalisms have been developed, many of them sharing common features. This paper summarizes the most relevant features of LDSar, a logical framework for defeasible argumentation based on LDS. We present a syntactic characterization of the framework, and discuss some emerging properties. We also show how di®erent existing argumentation frameworks are subsumed in LDSar .

Modelling Argumentation in a Logic-Programming Setting: Formalization and Logical Properties

Defeasible argumentation [17, 5, 14] has proven to be a successful approach to ̄nding a suitable formalization for reasoning with incomplete and potentially inconsistent information. Recent research (notably [1]) has shown that defeasible argumentation constitutes a con°uence point for characterizing traditional approaches to non-monotonic reasoning (such as Gelfond's extended logic programming ...

A Taxonomy for Argumentative Frameworks based on Labelled Deduction

Artificial Intelligence has long dealt with the issue of finding a suitable formalization for reasoning with incomplete and potentially inconsistent information. Defeasible argumentation [SL92,CML00,PraVre99] has proven to be a successful approach in many respects, since it naturally resembles many aspects of commonsense reasoning (see [CML00,PraVre99] for details). Besides, recent work [PraVre...

Modelling Inference in Argumentation through Labelled Deduction: Formalization and Logical Properties

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has long dealt with the issue of finding a suitable formalization for commonsense reasoning. Defeasible argumentation has proven to be a successful approach in many respects, proving to be a confluence point for many alternative logical frameworks. Different formalisms have been developed, most of them sharing the common notions of argument and warrant. In defeasibl...

Argumentation Based on Classical Logic

Argumentation is an important cognitive process for dealing with conflicting information by generating and/or comparing arguments. Often it is based on constructing and comparing deductive arguments. These are arguments that involve some premises (which we refer to as the support of the argument) and a conclusion (which we refer to as the claim of the argument) such that the support deductively...
