چکیده

Palmer amaranth is resistant to several herbicides, including glyphosate, and there is concern that the resistance traits can be transferred between spatially segregated populations via pollen movement. The objective of this study was to describe the physical properties of Palmer amaranth pollen, specifically size, density, and settling velocity (Vs), that influence pollen flight. The mean diameter for Palmer amaranth pollen, as determined by light microscopy, was 31 mm (range of 21 to 38 mm); mean pollen diameter as measured with the use of an electronic particle sizer was 27 mm (range of 21 to 35 mm). The mean density of the solid portion of the pollen grain was 1,435 kg m. Accounting for the density of the aqueous fraction, the mean density of a fully hydrated pollen grain was 1,218 kg m. By Stokes’s law, the estimated mean theoretical Vs for individual Palmer amaranth pollen grains was 3.4 cm s 21 for the range of pollen diameters with a mean of 31 mm and 2.6 cm s for the range of pollen diameters with a mean of 27 mm. Results from laboratory studies indicated the majority of single pollen grains settled at a rate of 5.0 cm s. The difference between the theoretical and empirical estimates of Vs was likely due to changes in pollen density and shape postanthesis, which are not accounted for using Stokes’s law, as well as the presence pollen clusters. Nomenclature: Glyphosate; Palmer amaranth, Amaranthus palmeri S.Wats.

Amplified fragment length polymorphism-based genetic relationships among weedy Amaranthus species.

Weedy Amaranthus species frequently cause economically significant reductions in crop yields. Accurate identification of Amaranthus species is important for efficient weed control, but Amaranthus species can interbreed, which might cause difficulty when identifying hybrid-derived specimens. To determine which of several economically important weedy Amaranthus species are most genetically simila...

Palmer Amaranth and Barnyardgrass Control as Influenced by Weed Size, Glufosinate Rate, Volume, and Spray Tip

Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) is known to be glyphosate-resistant and one of the most common and troublesome weeds in Arkansas cotton production. Glufosinate is known to provide good control of 1-4 inch Palmer amaranth, but control of larger weeds is erratic. The lack of control provided by glufosinate on large weeds may be caused by coverage issues. The objective of this study was to ev...

Overlapping Residual Herbicides for Control of Photosystem (PS) II- and 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate Dioxygenase (HPPD)-Inhibitor-Resistant Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) in Glyphosate-Resistant Maize

A Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) biotype has evolved resistance to photosystem (PS) II- (atrazine) and 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD)-inhibiting herbicides (mesotrione, tembotrione, and topramezone) in maize seed production field in Nebraska, USA. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of soil residual pre-emergence (PRE) herbicides followed by (fb...

Physiological and Molecular Mechanisms of Differential Sensitivity of Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri) to Mesotrione at Varying Growth Temperatures

Herbicide efficacy is known to be influenced by temperature, however, underlying mechanism(s) are poorly understood. A marked alteration in mesotrione [a 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitor] efficacy on Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson) was observed when grown under low- (LT, 25/15 °C, day/night temperatures) and high (HT, 40/30° C) temperature compared to optimum ...

Herbicide-Resistant Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.) in the United States — Mechanisms of Resistance, Impact, and Management

Palmer amaranth, a dioecious summer annual species, is one of the most trouble‐ some weeds in the agronomic crop production systems in the United States. In the last two decades, continuous reliance on herbicide(s) with the same mode of action as the sole weed management strategy has resulted in the evolution of herbicideresistant (HR) weeds, including Palmer amaranth. By 2015, Palmer amaranth ...
