Theoretical Description of Spacecraft Flybys by Variation of Parameters

چکیده
The planning of space missions to planets and small Solar-System bodies often requires numerous simulations in order to quantify the relative scientific value of various flyby geometries. Here, using the Born approximation for the unperturbed reference orbit, we describe a new perturbation theory for flyby orbits. Results are expressed in terms of the Doppler shift induced in the frequency of a spacecraft tracking signal. We show how these results can be used to simulate the determination of the body’s gravitational field, information that provides important boundary conditions on its interior structure. Covariance simulations for the Galilean satellites and for Titan compare favorably with rigorous results from JPL’s Orbit Determination Program (ODP). c © 1999 Academic Press

The Puzzle of the Flyby Anomaly
Close planetary flybys are frequently employed as a technique to place spacecraft on extreme solar system trajectories that would otherwise require much larger booster vehicles or may not even be feasible when relying solely on chemical propulsion. The theoretical description of the flybys, referred to as gravity assists, is well established. However, there seems to be a lack of understanding o...
متن کاملAnomalous orbital-energy changes observed during spacecraft flybys of earth.
We report and characterize anomalous orbital-energy changes observed during six Earth flybys by the Galileo, NEAR, Cassini, Rosetta, and MESSENGER spacecraft. These anomalous energy changes are consistent with an empirical prediction formula which is proportional to the total orbital energy per unit mass and which involves the incoming and outgoing geocentric latitudes of the asymptotic spacecr...
متن کاملPreliminary Design of Spacecraft Attitude Control with Pulse-Width Pulse-Frequency Modulator for Rest-to-Rest Maneuvers
In this paper, the preferred region of design parameters for quasi-normalized equations of single-axis attitude control of rigid spacecraft using pulse-width pulse-frequency modulator (PWPFM) is presented for rest-to-rest maneuvers. Using the quasi-normalized equations for attitude control reduces the system parameters, that is, the moment of inertia, the filter gain, and the maximum torque of ...
متن کاملModelling of the ring current in Saturn’s magnetosphere
The existence of a ring current inside Saturn’s magnetosphere was first suggested by Smith et al. (1980) and Ness et al. (1981, 1982), in order to explain various features in the magnetic field observations from the Pioneer 11 and Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. Connerney et al. (1983) formalized the equatorial current model, based on previous modelling work of Jupiter’s current sheet and estimated...
متن کاملPhobos_ Observed bulk properties
This work is a review of the mass determinations of the Mars moon Phobos by spacecraft close flybys, by solving for the Martian gravity field and by the analysis of secular orbit perturbations. The absolute value and accuracy is sensitive on the knowledge and accuracy of the Phobos ephemeris, of the spacecraft orbit, other perturbing forces acting on the spacecraft and the resolution of the Mar...
