Unskilled traders, overconfidence and information acquisition
نویسنده
چکیده
The value of an asset has two components, referred to as obvious and obscure. Unskilled traders are only aware of the obvious component and thus overestimate the precision of the information they may acquire. Unskilled traders are overconfident when informed and the intensity at which they trade makes researching the obscure component profitable to skilled traders, and this even when research costs are such that no information acquisition takes place in a skilled-only market. Hence overconfidence in our model encourages research by all, including the skilled (rational) traders. © 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modeling Decision Making Biases in the Context of a Market
The effects of two behavioral decision making biases are evaluated within the context of a system dynamics model of a market for a commodity, overconfidence and availability. Overconfidence is modeled as an increase in the percent of a trader’s capital they are willing to commit to any trade and is found to have the effect of increasing profits for traders with good information relative to trad...
متن کاملPrior outcomes and risky choices by professional traders Current draft : December 2003
How is professional risk-taking influenced by prior results? We examine the impact of past gains or losses on subsequent futures traders’ activity. The evidence provides support for the Gervais and Odean (2001) model of overconfidence: we find little relationship between higher risk taking and unusual success among these traders. Also consistent with Gervais and Odean, successful traders exhibi...
متن کاملWhy Do Investors Trade?
We propose and estimate a structural model of daily stock market activity to test competing theories of trading volume. The model features informed rational speculators and uninformed agents who trade either to hedge endowment shocks or to speculate on perceived information. To identify the model parameters, we exploit enormous empirical variation in trading volume, market liquidity, and return...
متن کاملAmbiguity vs risk: An experimental study of overconfidence, gender and trading activity
In this paper, we investigate the effect of overconfidence and gender on trading activity in experimental asset markets under a symmetric information setting. We measure the degree of overconfidence in three forms—miscalibration, a better-than-average effect, and the illusion of control, and design two treatments (Ambiguity and Risk) that differ by the prior information available about the dist...
متن کاملOverconfidence of Professionals and Lay Men: Individual Differences Within and Between Tasks?
Overconfidence can manifest itself in various forms. For example, people think that their knowledge is more precise than it really is (miscalibration) and they believe that their abilities are above average (better than average effect). The questions whether judgment biases are related or whether stable individual differences in the degree of overconfidence exist, have long been unexplored. In ...
