The Hydrogen Clouds in the Galactic Halo
نویسنده
چکیده
New 21cm observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) show that a significant fraction of the HI in the inner Galaxy’s halo ∼ 1 kpc from the midplane exists in the form of discrete clouds. Some look very much like a Spitzer (1968) “standard” diffuse cloud but with their HI in two phases. They mark the transition between the neutral disk and the highly ionized halo. The dominant motion of the clouds is Galactic rotation, but some have random velocities of as much as 50 km s. They are part of the Galaxy and are not related to high-velocity clouds, yet their origin is obscure.

Molecular Gas in the Galactic Halo and Beyond
I review recent observations of molecular gas in the halo of the Milky Way and in the Magellanic Clouds. Far-ultraviolet absorption line studies of molecular hydrogen (H2) with ORFEUS and FUSE have unveiled the presence of a diffuse molecular hydrogen component in intermediateand high-velocity clouds in the Galactic halo. Although the number of measurements is still quite small, the data sugges...
متن کاملIs the Galactic Halo Baryonic ?
Recent observations of microlensing events in the Large Magel-lanic Cloud suggest that a sizeable fraction of the galactic halo is in the form of Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects (MACHOs) with mass less than about 0.1M ⊙. Here we argue that molecular clouds (mainly of H 2) located in the galactic halo can contribute substantially to its total mass. We outline a scenario in which dark ...
متن کاملM ay 2 00 2 Accepted for publication in ApJ The small - scale structure of the Magellanic Stream
We have mapped two regions at the northern tip of the Magellanic Stream in neutral hydrogen 21-cm emission using the Arecibo telescope. The new data are used to study the morphology and properties of the Stream far away from the Magellanic Clouds, as well as to provide indirect constraints on the properties of the Galactic Halo. We investigate confinement mechanisms for the Stream clouds and co...
متن کاملLow-Velocity Halo Clouds
Models that reproduce the observed high-velocity clouds (HVCs) also predict clouds at lower radial velocities that may easily be confused with Galactic disk (|z| < 1 kpc) gas. We describe the first search for these low-velocity halo clouds (LVHCs) using IRAS data and the initial data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array survey in Hi (GALFA-Hi). The technique is based upon the expectation...
متن کاملDiscovery of a Population of H I Clouds in the Galactic Halo (Accepted for Publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters)
A population of discrete H I clouds in the halo of the inner Galaxy has been discovered in 21cm observations made with the Green Bank Telescope. The halo clouds are seen up to 1.5 kpc from the Galactic plane at tangent points throughout the first longitude quadrant and at several locations in the fourth quadrant. Their velocities follow Galactic rotation. A group of clouds more than 500 pc belo...
