چکیده

This paper presents a longitudinal analysis of the extent to which age affects F0 and formant frequencies. Five speakers at two time intervals showed a clear effect for F0 and F1 but no systematic effects for F2 or F3. In two speakers for which recordings were available in successive years over a 50 year period, results showed with increasing age a decrease in both F0 and F1 for a female speaker and a Vshaped pattern, i.e. a decrease followed by an increase in both F0 and F1 for a male speaker. This analysis also provided strong evidence that F1 approximately tracked F0 across the years: i.e., the rate of change of (the logarithm of) F0 and F1 were generally the same. We then also tested that the changes in F1 were not an acoustic artifact of changing F0. Perception experiments with the main aim of assessing whether changes in F1 contributed to age judgments beyond those from F0 showed that the contribution of F1 was inconsistent and negligible. The general conclusion is that age-related changes in F1 may be compensatory to offset a physiologically induced decline in F0 and thereby maintain a relatively constant auditory distance between F0 and F1. ! 2010 Elsevier B.V. Effects of Aging on Vocal Fundamental Frequency and Vowel Formants in Men and Women.

PURPOSE This study reports data on vocal fundamental frequency (fo) and the first four formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3, F4) for four vowels produced by speakers in three adult age cohorts, in a test of the null hypothesis that there are no age-related changes in these variables. Participants were 43 men and 53 women between the ages of 20 and 92 years. RESULTS The most consistent age-related ...

On-line formant shifting as a function of F0

We investigate whether there is a within-speaker effect of a higher F0 on the values of the first and the second formant. When asked to speak at a high F0, speakers turn out to raise their formants as well. In the F1 dimension this effect is greater for women than for men. We conclude that the general formant raising effect might be due to the physiology of a high F0 (i.e. raised larynx and sho...

Analysis of voice register transition focused on the relationship between pitch and formant frequency

When the voice register transition (VRT) occurs, vocal-folds motion becomes unstable and the voice pitch jumps abruptly. In this article, we examine the relationship between the fundamental frequency f0 and the first-formant frequency F1 in VRT to reveal the influence of the source–filter interaction (SFI) on VRT. Five Japanese male speakers produced rising glissandos with vowels /a/ and /i/. T...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

Acoustic effects of variation in vocal effort by men, women, and children.

The acoustic effects of the adjustment in vocal effort that is required when the distance between speaker and addressee is varied over a large range (0.3-187.5 m) were investigated in phonated and, at shorter distances, also in whispered speech. Several characteristics were studied in the same sentence produced by men, women, and 7-year-old boys and girls: duration of vowels and consonants, pau...
