چکیده

Culture conditions are described under which Cyanophora paradoxa grows with a generation time of less than two days. The organism is an obligate photoautotrophic flagellate unable to degrade exogenous carbohydrates via respiration. It does not synthesize nitrogenase but can form a hydrogenase with similar properties as in blue-green algae. The photosynthetic 0 2-evolution pro ceeds with essentially the same rate as in green or blue-green algae. Besides C O , , p-benzochinon, nitrate and nitrite also stimulate the photosynthetic 0 2-evolution. Nitrite reduction is strictly lightdependent where the stoicheiometry between nitrite-disappearance and photosynthetic 0 2-evolution is 1:1.5. It is concluded that the cyanelles supply the eucaryotic host both with carbon and nitrogen compounds.

Transketolase from Cyanophora paradoxa: in vitro import into cyanelles and pea chloroplasts and a complex history of a gene often, but not always, transferred in the context of secondary endosymbiosis.

The glaucocystophyte Cyanophora paradoxa is an obligatorily photoautotrophic biflagellated protist containing cyanelles, peculiar plastids surrounded by a peptidoglycan layer between their inner and outer envelope membranes. Although the 136-kb cyanelle genome surpasses higher plant chloroplast genomes in coding capacity by about 50 protein genes, these primitive plastids still have to import >...

Cyanophora paradoxa: Fatty Acids and Fatty Acid Synthesis in vitro

Cyanophora paradoxa, Cyanelles, Fatty Acid Pattern, Fatty Acid Synthesis in vitro The fatty acid pattern of Cyanophora paradoxa membrane lipids is highly unusual with 16:0, 20:3 and 20:4 as the main acids. The 20:4 acid is preferentially distributed among the cyanelle lipids. In isolated cyanelles a relatively low in vitro synthesis of only saturated and monounsatu rated fatty acids from [l-14...

Characterization of the influence of chlororespiration on the regulation of photosynthesis in the glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa

Glaucophytes are primary symbiotic algae with unique plastids called cyanelles, whose structure is most similar to ancestral cyanobacteria among plastids in photosynthetic organisms. Here we compare the regulation of photosynthesis in glaucophyte with that in cyanobacteria in the aim of elucidating the changes caused by the symbiosis in the interaction between photosynthetic electron transfer a...

The central body of the cyanelles of Cyanophora paradoxa: a eukaryotic carboxysome?1

The cyanelles of the glaucocystophyte Cyanophora paradoxa combine two prokaryotic features not found in other phototrophic eukaryotes: a peptidoglycan wall and a putative carboxysome. Both of them would be indispensable when a inorganic carbon concentrating mechanism involving high accumulation of bicarbonate in the cyanelle stroma is assumed. Two approaches were used. (i) An expressed sequence...

Identification of protein N-termini in Cyanophora paradoxa cyanelles: transit peptide composition and sequence determinants for precursor maturation

Glaucophyta, rhodophyta, and chloroplastida represent the three main evolutionary lineages that diverged from a common ancestor after primary endosymbiosis. Comparative analyses between members of these three lineages are a rich source of information on ancestral plastid features. We analyzed the composition and the cleavage site of cyanelle transit peptides from the glaucophyte Cyanophora para...
