Rectus sheath haematoma: a rare cause of abdominal pain in pregnancy.

چکیده
Objective: Rectus sheath haematoma (RSH) is a rare entity described as accumulation of blood within the rectus muscle. Patients can present with varying symptoms and signs, mimicking acute abdominal conditions. Failure to diagnose can result in unnecessary diagnostic procedures and surgical interventions. Methods: We presented a series of 14 cases of RSH presenting to two emergency departments (ED) within a period of 3 years. Their demographic characteristics, medical history, presenting signs, symptoms and treatment were analyzed. Results: Fourteen cases were diagnosed RSH. Seven cases were on warfarin treatment. Three RSH cases were diagnosed by ultrasonography (USG) only while the remainders had additional computed tomography (CT). Two cases had surgery due to haemoperitoneum, and the rest were treated conservatively with bed rest, analgesics and reversal of anticoagulation therapy. All patients were discharged from hospitals. Conclusions: RSH is an important entity which must be considered in patients with known risk factors presenting to ED with abdominal pain. In elderly patients with a history of cough, anticoagulant use with palpable mass on abdominal wall, RSH must be considered as a possible diagnosis for unexplained abdominal pain. USG, together with CT in selected cases, should be performed to reveal this rare disease entity. (Hong Kong j.emerg.med. 2011;18:161-165)

متن کاملSpontaneous Rectus Sheath Hematoma as a Rare Cause of Abdominal Pain in a Patient Under Oral Anticoagulation
Rectus sheath hematoma (RSH) is a rare entity [1] which is caused by rupture of the perforating branches of the inferior epigastric artery running in the preperitoneal fat, causing a large haematoma spreading in the looser rectus sheath space. Non-invasive imaging modalities including CT scan are the key to establish its early diagnosis. It is often misdiagnosed as many other serious intra-abdo...

A 26-year-old male canoeist was referred with a 10-day history of abdominal pain, and a palpable mass in the left upper quadrant. No history of direct trauma was given. He was not taking any medication, and malignancy and inflammatory conditions were considered in the differential diagnosis. Ultrasonographic scan identified a mass originating in the rectus abdominis sheath. Ultrasonographically...
متن کاملRectus sheath haematoma or leaking aortic aneurysm - a diagnostic challenge: a case report
INTRODUCTION A rectus sheath haematoma is a rare condition that arises from the accumulation of blood within the rectus sheath from either muscular tear or rupture of the epigastric vessels. It is a known complication of either blunt abdominal trauma, anticoagulation therapy or the repetitive contraction of the rectus muscle such as paroxysms of coughing. It remains an uncommon and elusive enti...

BACKGROUND Rectus sheath hematoma (RSH) represents a rare, but serious cause of abdominal pain. CASE Here we discuss the case of a healthy multigravida female who presented at 28 weeks gestation with spontaneous RSH. Conservative management with multiple blood transfusions led to the development of transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) and intensive care unit admission. She was manage...
