Nonylphenol Ethoxylates: A Safer Alternative Exists to This Toxic Cleaning Agent

Flexocleaners.com and The Sierra Club urge the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), state agencies and corporations to eliminate the use of the cleaning agent, nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs), in the industrial and domestic laundry detergent used in the United States. NPE metabolites often pass through wastewater treatment plants at a concentration that has been shown to cause harmful effects to aquatic biota in laboratory studies. Unlike any other cleaning agent, NPEs metabolize into more toxic, less biodegradable metabolites that display estrogenic properties. (1-4)
