Spinal problems in myelomeningocele-orthotic principles.

چکیده
Spinal curvatures associated with myelo meningocele represent complex problems which, if no t recognized early, determine the future ambula tory status of the patient. In recognizing the importance of functional spinal alignment, it is manda tory to supervise closely a child from infancy and to institute early protective care (Bunch et al., 1972). Spinal problems are not necessarily evident a t birth. Sharrard (1972) reported that 75 per cent of the myelomeningocele patients examined a t bir th showed no spinal abnormali ty. A n earlier study conducted at Newington Children's Hospital (Raycroft and Curtis, 1972) reported comparable findings. It is of interest tha t in this study 79 per cent of the 130 patients involved h a d bony defects limited t o the posterior

The problems associated with flail feet in children and their treatment with orthoses.
Children with flail feet who have control of their hips and knees are able to walk but are unable to stand still and find it difficult to walk slowly. These problems have been overcome in fifty-three children with flail feet due to myelomeningocele by fitting them with below-knee orthoses which provide maximum stability and yet allow normal walking. The biomechanical principles and the developm...

OBJECTIVE To compare neuromotor development between patients who did and those who did not undergo intrauterine myelomeningocele repair. METHODS Children with myelomeningocele aged between 3.5 and 6 years who did undergo intrauterine repair (Group A, n=6) or not (Group B; n=7) were assessed for neuromotor development at both anatomical and functional levels, need for orthoses, and cognitive f...
متن کاملA clinical review of the orthotic treatment of myelomeningocele patients.
High myelomeningocele lesions do not preclude an acceptable level of functional walking provided that an integrated programme of surgical treatment and bracing is adopted. Clinical analysis of 100 patients with myelomeningocele shows that the development of the "swivel walker" and "hip guidance orthosis" has been associated with an improved level of function. Over 30 per cent of patients with t...
متن کاملReciprocating orthoses for children with myelomeningocele. A comparison of two types.
Since 1987, 22 children with myelomeningocele have been fitted with reciprocating orthoses. The level of the spinal lesions ranged from T10 to L4 and 13 had associated spinal deformities. Twelve of the patients currently use a Reciprocating Gait Orthosis, seven use a Hip Guidance Orthosis or Parawalker, one has progressed to a Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis, one has died and one has been lost to foll...
متن کاملSurgical Management of Hip Problems in Myelomeningocele: A Review Article
Background: Children with myelomeningocele (MMC) develop a wide variety of hip deformities such as muscle imbalance, contracture, subluxation, and dislocation. Various methods and indications have been introduced for treatment of muscle imbalances and other hip problems in patients with MMC but there is no study or meta-analysis to compare the results and complications. This review aims to fi...
