Is Bone Grafting necessary following open reduction and internal fixation of supracondylar/intercondylar femur fracture with locking compression plate?

چکیده
The common problems seen in distal femoral fractures are communition, articular surface involvement, fractures in multiple planes and bone loss in compound fractures. They present a challenge to the surgeon to achieve stable fixation and union. With different methods of internal fixation available, the common complications encountered with distal femoral fractures are malunion, varus collapse, delayed union, implant failure and shortening of the limb etc. This necessitates the option of primary bone grafting in treating such fractures. Here, we are presenting our results of 38 cases of distal femoral fractures treated with locking compression plates without primary bone grafting. The functional outcome was excellent in 18 cases and good in 16 cases as per Neer’s rating system. We obtained union in all cases without any primary bone grafting.

Condylar Buttress Plate for Fixation of Distal Femur Fracture: Functional and Anatomical Evaluation
Background: Distal Femur fractures are one of the common fractures occurring in road traffic accidents. Various modalities are used for fracture of distal femur, one of them is condylar buttress plate. Various studies have claimed better results in surgical management of distal femur fracture. This study was planned to compare two treatment modalities for supracondylar and intercondylar fractur...
متن کاملCoronal Plane Small-Fragment Fixation in Supracondylar Intercondylar Femur Fractures.
Supracondylar intercondylar distal femur fractures are devastating injuries that frequently have a concurrent coronal plane fracture, which mandates dedicated operative fixation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether small-fragment cortical lag screws oriented in the sagittal plane were sufficient to stabilize coronal plane fractures associated with supracondylar intercondylar dist...
متن کاملAn Unusual Case of “Locking” of the Knee Four Years Post Fixation of an Open Supracondylar Femur Fracture
UNLABELLED The introduction of locking plate devices have increased the number of viable options for fracture fixation. An understanding of the indications and contraindications and technique limitations are important to minimise associated adverse events. We report the case of a patient who presented with a single broken screw head four years following fixation of a supracondylar femur fractur...
متن کاملSupracondylar Osteotomy in Valgus Knee: Angle Blade Plate Versus Locking Compression Plate
Background: There are few studies comparing the biomechanical properties of angled blade plate and locking compression plates in supracondylar osteotomy. In the current randomized study, we prospectively compared the clinical and radiological outcomes of supracondylar osteotomy using these two plates. Methods: Forty patients with valgus knee malalignment were randomly assigned to two equal nu...
متن کاملThe Effects of Bone Screw Configurations on the Interfragmentary Movement in a Long Bone Fixed by a Limited Contact Locking Compression Plate
The locking compression plates (LCP) are efficient tools in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF), especially in osteoporotic bones. Two important factors of screw density and screw position can affect the functionality of the bone plate. Several studies have assessed the influence of the screw configurations on the bone-plate stiffness, but the effects of screw positions on the interfrag...
