The Strategic Use of Liquid Lime in Sludge Treatment

چکیده

Lime treatment of wastewater sludge has been in use for over a century. This paper describes the use of ‘Liquid Lime’ and hydrated lime suspensions as a sludge treatment process for the specific purpose of agricultural recycling. The introduction of ‘Liquid Lime’ treatment has enabled South West Water to achieve full compliance with the Sludge (Use in Agriculture) Regulations at a time when the major refurbishment of a number of existing anaerobic digestion installations had been identified to enable the final sludge product to be recycled to land. Initially considered as a shortterm solution to transient problems, liquid lime dosing has been shown to be an efficient method of pathogen reduction and a cost effective alternative sludge treatment process for medium term applications. A comprehensive review of the advantages and potential difficulties to be encountered when introducing liquid lime treatment at existing sludge treatment centres has been undertaken. The findings of the review have provided confidence that liquid lime dosing could be relied upon as a robust sludge treatment process and could play an important role in the company’s sludge strategy. The role that liquid lime sludge treatment has played in the modification of the sludge strategy, and the savings in capital expenditure that have been realised, are discussed.

Comparison of Sludge Characteristics between Lime and Limestone/lime Treatment of Acid Mine Drainage

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Colorado School of Mines and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has demonstrated the application of pulsed limestone bed (PLB) treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) at the Argo tunnel discharge near Idaho Springs, Colorado. Current technology for AMD treatment at the Argo facility is neutralization with lime. However, lime neutralizatio...

Potential investigation of Reusing Ardabil Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludge Based on AHP and TOPSIS Models

Introduction :By ever-increasing of population, shortage of water resources and the necessity of wastewater treatment, huge volumes of sludge that is a byproduct of wastewater treatment, requires to be disposed in environmentally secure ways. The target of specifying strategic preferences of reuse of sludge has been to find the correct way of disposal or beneficial use of sludge. Material and ...

Reuse of water treatment residuals from lime softening, Part I: Applications for the reuse of lime sludge from water softening

Lime sludge, an inert material mostly composed of calcium carbonate, is the result of softening hard water before distribution as drinking water. A large city such as Des Moines, Iowa, produces about 32 000 tons of lime sludge (dry-weight basis) annually. This is about half of the lime sludge produced in Iowa per year in eight different cities, and these cities currently have 371 800 tons (dry-...

Lactic Acid Fermentation, Urea and Lime Addition: Promising Faecal Sludge Sanitizing Methods for Emergency Sanitation.

In this research, three faecal sludge sanitizing methods-lactic acid fermentation, urea treatment and lime treatment-were studied for application in emergency situations. These methods were investigated by undertaking small scale field trials with pit latrine sludge in Blantyre, Malawi. Hydrated lime was able to reduce the E. coli count in the sludge to below the detectable limit within 1 h app...

SUSTAINABLE WATER AND SANITATION SERVICES FOR ALL IN A FAST CHANGING WORLD Household-level application of hydrated lime for on-site treatment and agricultural use of latrine sludge

Rural areas of Cambodia have no safe waste management strategies for household latrine waste. Household application of lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2) would enable households to treat waste easily on-site and significantly reduce the risk of latrine sludge causing negative impacts on human health and the environment, whilst transforming latrines into incubators of a valuable agricultural addi...
