Is Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology Worth the Extra Money to the Average User?

چکیده

In the mid-1990’s, Intel Corporation decided to use symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) in order to increase the number of instructions that could execute simultaneously by putting more than one processor on a motherboard. This idea increased the overall performance of a system, but it was too expensive for the average user to afford. Intel then looked into the idea of simultaneous multithreading (SMT) for a single processor. The idea was to allow one processor to execute two threads simultaneously to increase the performance of the system. This technology was applied to Intel’s processors and is called hyper-threading technology. This paper compares SMP to SMT and shows how the two technologies as similar, but very different. It then goes on to describe the hyper-threading technology in a little more detail and shows how hyper-threading compared to non-hyper-threading processors against some benchmarks and tests.

Performance Implications of Hyper-Threading

1 Ethan Bolker is also Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Intel’s recently introduced Hyper-Threading Technology (HTT) makes a single physical processor appear as two logical processors. Operating systems and applications can schedule processes or threads on those logical processors. The performance impact of HTT varies, depending on the nature of the appl...

Intel OpenMP C++/Fortran Compiler for Hyper-Threading Technology: Implementation and Performance

In the never-ending quest for higher performance, CPUs become faster and faster. Processor resources, however, are generally underutilized by many applications. Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology is developed to resolve this issue. This new technology allows a single processor to manage data as if it were two processors by executing data instructions from different threads in parallel rather th...

Hyper-Threading Technology Architecture and Microarchitecture

Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology brings the concept of simultaneous multi-threading to the Intel Architecture. Hyper-Threading Technology makes a single physical processor appear as two logical processors; the physical execution resources are shared and the architecture state is duplicated for the two logical processors. From a software or architecture perspective, this means operating system...

Multi-core processors - An overview

Microprocessors have revolutionized the world we live in and continuous efforts are being made to manufacture not only faster chips but also smarter ones. A number of techniques such as data level parallelism, instruction level parallelism and hyper threading (Intel’s HT) already exists which have dramatically improved the performance of microprocessor cores. [1, 2] This paper briefs on evoluti...

An Empirical Study of Hyper-Threading in High-Performance Computing Clusters

The effects of Intel Hyper-Threading technology on a system performance vary according to the type of applications the system is running. Hyper-Threading affects High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters similarly. The characteristics of application run on a cluster will determine whether Hyper-Threading will help or hinder performance. In addition, the operating system’s support for scheduling...
