چکیده

The M•,=7.4 Izmit, Turkey earthquake triggered widespread regional seismicity in Greece over a study region extending from 400 km to nearly 1000 km away from the epicenter. Small events began immediately after the passage of the mainshock surface waves suggesting that the transient stresses of the seismic waves were the trigger. The increase in cataloged earthquakes in ordinary continental crust is a new observation and is statistically significant at the 95% level. Unlike the previous example of distant triggering during the Landers earthquake, the activated seismicity occurred entirely in non-volcanic areas. The Greek sites were triggered by waves with amplitudes at least a factor of 3 lower than the observed triggering threshold for Imperial Valley. We speculate that dynamic triggering on a regionalscale results in countrywide episodes of increased seismicity, or "superswarms", in regions with low triggering thresholds such as Greece.

Anomalous seismicity preceding the 1999

The 1999 Izmit earthquake (17/08/1999, Mw=7.4) was one of the largest earthquakes to occur in northwestern Turkey during the past 100 years. This earthquake occurred along the Izmit-Sapanca fault within the Northern Anatolian Fault Zone. Variations in the generalized fractal dimensions (Dq) of clustering in time and space, the Gutenberg-Richter b value, and earthquake frequency (N) are evaluate...

Seismicity in Idaho and Montana Triggered by the Denali Fault Earthquake: A Window into the Geologic Context for Seismic Triggering

We present a case study of dynamically triggered seismicity in Idaho and western Montana from the 2002 MW 7.9 Denali fault earthquake to investigate the relationship between measured geological discriminants and propensity for triggering. We first establish triggering. We find events that are not reported in the Advanced National Seismic System catalog in Idaho and Yellowstone following the Den...

b - Value Variations Preceding the Devastating , 1999 Earthquake , near Izmit , Turkey

b-Value Variations Preceding the Devastating, 1999 Earthquake, near Izmit, Turkey Sara Andersson The potential of temporal b-value variations as an intermediate-term (weeks to months) earthquake precursor was investigated in the western portion of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ), between January 1982 to December 2004. The focus of the study is on the devastating, 1999 earthquake, near Izm...

Reply to comment on ‘‘How fast is rupture during an earthquake? New insights from the 1999 Turkey earthquakes’’

[1] In a previous paper [Bouchon et al., 2001], we presented what we believe are strong indications of supershear rupture over parts of the faults of the 1999 Turkey earthquakes. These findings are based on near-fault recordings and modeling of the ground motion. We also showed that the supershear value inferred for the Izmit earthquake (the only event for which this velocity is well resolved) ...
