SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES IN GALACTIC NUCLEI Observational Evidence and Some Astrophysical Consequences

چکیده
Abstract. I review the status of observational determinations of central masses in nearby galactic nuclei. Results from a variety of techniques are summarized, including ground-based and space-based optical spectroscopy, radio VLBI measurements of luminous water vapor masers, and variability monitoring studies of active galactic nuclei. I will also discuss recent X-ray observations that indicate relativistic motions arising from the accretion disks of active nuclei. The existing evidence suggests that supermassive black holes are an integral component of galactic structure, at least in elliptical and bulgedominated galaxies. The black hole mass appears to be correlated with the mass of the spheroidal component of the host galaxy. This finding may have important implications for many astrophysical issues.

Black Holes in Active Galactic Nuclei
The most viable scenario for modelling of active galactic nuclei includes a supermassive black hole (with the mass of 106−109 Solar masses) accreting the galaxian matter from its vicinity. The release of the gravitational energy of the infalling matter is ultimately responsible for the large radiative output of those objects, and in some cases, for formation and acceleration of powerful relativ...
متن کاملStarburst-AGN Connection: A Lesson from High-z Powerful Radio Galaxies
Powerful radio galaxies at high redshift are highly useful in studies of early evolution of AGN-hosting galaxies because their observed optical and near infrared light are dominated by their stellar population rather than the nonthermal continuum emitted by the central engine of AGNs. In addition, the presence of AGN activity in them implies that a supermassive black hole has been already made ...
متن کاملBlack Holes in Galactic Nuclei: the Promise and the Facts
It has long been suspected that Active Galactic Nuclei are powered by accretion of matter onto massive black holes and this belief implies their presence in the nuclei of most nearby galaxies as ”relics” of past activity. Just a few years ago this was considered a paradigm but, recently, new ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope observations are producing a breakthrough in our knowledge on ma...
متن کاملAstrophysical Evidence for Black Holes
The case for collapsed objects in some X-ray binary systems continues to strengthen. But there is now even firmer evidence for supermassive black holes in galactic centres. Gravitational collapse seems to have occurred in the centres of most newly-forming galaxies, manifesting itself in a phase of quasar-like activity (which may be reactivated later). These phenomena (especially the gas-dynamic...
متن کاملAstrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes
Following a short account of the history of the idea of black holes, we present a review of the current status of the search for observational evidence of their existence aimed at an audience of relativists rather than astronomers or astrophysicists. We focus on two different regimes: that of stellar-mass black holes and that of black holes with the masses of galactic nuclei.
