Stable isotopic composition of upper oceanic crust formed at a fast spreading ridge, ODP Site 801

چکیده
[1] ODP Legs 129 and 185 sampled the upper 474 m of 170 Ma ocean crust in the western Pacific in order to investigate alteration processes in fast spread crust and to determine inputs to subduction. Fourteen composite bulk samples of altered upper oceanic crust from Site 801 have dO = 8.7–25.7%, dD = 69.4% to 90.4%, and dC = 2.7% to 1.8%. The intensity of alteration and the amount of sediment within the basement decrease with depth, leading to corresponding decreases in dO and dD. A SUPER composite, constructed to estimate the bulk composition of the upper crust, has dO = 12.0%, dD = 87.0%, and dC = 0.7%. Compared to core descriptions and geophysical logs, the SUPER composite contains too much O-rich sediment (dO = 25.7%), and a corrected dO value of 10.8% is more reasonable for the upper crust at Site 801. These values are higher than those for other bulk upper oceanic basement sections (dO = 8.0–10.0%) and result in part from: (1) intense low-temperature (<100 C) hydrothermal alteration of the upper 100 m of tholeiitic basement at Site 801 that may not be representative of material subducting in the western Pacific and (2) an aging effect, whereby progressive addition of Orich secondary carbonate in veins and breccia cements contributed to the high bulk dO of this old upper crustal section.

Leg 185 Preliminary Report
Subduction zones are the primary regions on Earth today where crust recycling takes place, and through geological time they have been the sites of continent formation. Many of the key elements (e.g., Th, rare earth elements, Ba, and Be) that are important in understanding crustal growth are sequestered in the sedimentary column and in the uppermost oxidized portions of the volcanic section of o...
متن کاملPetrological and geodynamical constraints of Chaldoran basaltic rocks, NW of Iran: evidence from geochemical characteristics
Chaldoran area in NW of Iran has Mesozoic oceanic crust basement. The studied rocks of this region can be divided into three groups: ophiolitic gabbros and pillow lavas, ophiolitic volcanoclastics and Eocene lava flows. Ophiolitic mafic rocks show continental volcanic arc natures and Eocene lava flow shows OIB-like nature. During the Mesozoic, the Chaldoran region was situated in the active cont...
متن کاملMelt migration through the oceanic lower crust: a constraint from melt percolation modeling with finite solid diffusion
We present a melt percolation model incorporating finite solid diffusion to provide a quantitative constraint on how melt migrates through the oceanic lower crust at fast-spreading ridge axes. The lower crustal, layered gabbro in the Oman ophiolite, which was formed at a fast-spreading ridge, shows correlated variations in primary mineral compositions with a vertical wavelength less than 100–20...
متن کاملVariation of cooling rate with depth in lower crust formed at an oceanic spreading ridge: Plagioclase crystal size distributions in gabbros from the Oman ophiolite
[1] Abstract: Analysis of crystal size distributions (CSD) of plagioclase in gabbros from the Oman ophiolite indicates that cooling rates in the lower crust beneath a mediumto fast-spreading oceanic ridge did not vary smoothly with depth. Cooling rates in the upper half of the gabbro section were approximately 1.5–2 times faster than in the lower half of the gabbro section during igneous crysta...
متن کاملOxygen isotope composition of a section of lower oceanic crust, ODP Hole 735B
[1] The oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions of vein minerals and dO values of 64 whole rocks from the deeper kilometer of the 1.5 km lower crustal section of ODP Hole 735B in the SW Indian Ocean were analyzed in order to investigate seawater penetration into and reaction with the lower oceanic crust. Vein amphiboles have dD values of 35 to 65%, indicating formation from seawater fluids and...
