چکیده

Although there has been widespread interest in the relationship of diet to atherosclerosis and its complications, much less attention has been paid to the effect of diet on thrombus formation. For the most part, exploration of this problem has been indirect; in the first place, it has been supposed that in vitro tests of coagulation are good measures of the coagulant activity of the blood and thrombus formation; and in the second, it has been supposed that coagulant activity in vivo reflects tendency to form thrombi. In a previous study (1), we attempted to circumvent the former supposition by directing our attention to platelet survival, which can be studied in vivo in man and in experimental animals. The ideal method of obviating the latter supposition would be to devise methods of quantitating thrombus formation in the intact animal. Semiquantitative grading systems have been used by some investigators. As yet, however, no satisfactory, precise quantitative method has been devised. Connor and Poole (2) and Connor (3), recognizing that movement of the blood, particularly in the arterial circulation, may be an important factor in thrombus formation, used Chandler's apparatus (4) to study the effect of various fatty acids on thrombus formation. In their experiments, citrated blood was mixed with the fatty acid for one minute. It was then recalcified inside the apparatus, and the time for the appearance of clotting was noted. We have described elsewhere a method for quan-

Studies on antiplatelet effect of OP-41483, a prostaglandin I2 analog, in experimental animals. I. Effect on platelet function and thrombosis.

Antiplatelet and antithrombotic effects of OP-41483, a PGl2 analog, were studied in experimental animals, and the following results were obtained: 1) With 10 min-intravenous infusion to guinea pigs, OP-41483 inhibited platelet adhesiveness and platelet aggregation at 300-1000 ng/kg/min and 1000 ng/kg/min, respectively. In these effects, OP-41483 was 1-3 times more potent than carbacyclin and 3 ...

Tracheal Chondrosarcoma Excised With Extracorporeal Circulation

Introduction: Tracheal chondrosarcoma (TCS) is a rare malignancy, with only 19 cases described in the literature to date. Case presentation: Herein, we presented the third-largest TCS with such an airway compromise that neither orotracheal intubation nor jet ventilation or even tracheostomy was possible. So, extracorporeal circulation was needed to excise the tumor in a one-stage procedure. Th...

Effect of Left Atrial Ablation Process and Strategy on Microemboli Formation During Irrigated Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation in an In Vivo Model.

BACKGROUND Formation of microemboli during catheter ablation has been suggested as a cause for asymptomatic cerebral emboli. However, it is unknown which part of the process and ablation setting/strategy is most strongly related to this occurrence. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 27 pigs were used. Catheter/sheath manipulations in left atrium were performed in 25 of 27 pigs outfitted with micr...

Blood platelet economy during moderate and intensive heparin therapy.

By J. F. MUSTARD AND EDMOND A. MURPHY T HE EFFECT OF HEPARIN on the physiology of platelets in vitro has been extensively studied. We share the misgivings of O’Brien1 that results of in vitro studies on coagulation cannot uncritically be applied to effects in vivo. Previous studies in vitro and in extracorporeal circulations2-5 showed that heparin decreases platelet adhesiveness and inhibits th...

Renal cell carcinoma with thrombus in the inferior vena cava: extracorporeal circulation and deep hypothermia without open-chest surgery.

INTRODUCTION Renal cell carcinoma with thrombus in the inferior vena cava and no apparent metastasis requires immediate surgical treatment. Over the last few years, extracorporeal circulation with deep hypothermia and total circulatory arrest have played an increasingly important role in the treatment of diseases not associated with primary cardiovascular disorders, such as cavoatrial tumor thr...
