In-beam PET monitoring of phantom irradiation with Li-ions

چکیده
In-beam PET is presently the only possibility of a beamline independent dose delivery monitoring in heavyion therapy. It is clinically implemented at the experimental heavy ion treatment facility at GSI Darmstadt. Since 1997 almost 400 patients have been treated there with C-ions while monitoring of dose application with inbeam PET has been performed. In the future it is expected to extend tumour irradiation also to other ion species with atomic numbers between 1 (protons) and 8 (oxygen) [1]. Since the application of in-beam PET also for these ions is highly desirable extensive knowledge about the spatial distribution of generated positron emitters is required. Therefore, the β-activity induced by Li ions has been investigated for the first time at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI) Darmstadt.

Prediction of positron emitter distributions produced during 7Li irradiation
The clinical benefit of monitoring the applied dose in therapeutic carbon ion irradiation by means of in-beam PET has been proven at the experimental heavy ion treatment facility at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt. For future treatment of tumour patients the application of different ion species with atomic numbers between 1 (protons) and 8 (oxygen) is conceivable [1]. I...

Introduction At the experimental heavy ion therapy facility at the GSI Darmstadt the in-beam PET scanner BASTEI is operated for quality assurance monitoring simultaneously to the therapeutic irradiation [1-3]. Due to the relatively short irradiation time, low number of positron emitters production rate and limited-angle geometry in-beam PET data are characterized by very low counting statistics...

The in-beam PET camera has been operated in combination with beam tracking [2]. A homogeneous PMMA phantom was placed in the center of the field of view of the scanner and moved parallel to the two detector heads (left-right in beam’s eye view with 3 cm peak-to-peak amplitude and ≈ 3 s period). The prescribed dose was a twodimensionally spread-out Bragg-peak (SOBP) of 5×5 cm extension, centered...

PURPOSE Due to the high conformity of carbon ion therapy, unpredictable changes in the patient's geometry or deviations from the planned beam properties can result in changes of the dose distribution. PET has been used successfully to monitor the actual dose distribution in the patient. However, it suffers from biological washout processes and low detection efficiency. The purpose of this contr...
متن کاملExperimental investigations on in-beam PET for proton therapy
Following the promising results of [1], further phantom experiments have been performed at GSI in order to address the feasibility and accuracy of in-beam positron emission tomography (PET) for proton therapy. For the most challenging issue of range monitoring it has been demonstrated for mono-energetic as well as for spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) irradiation that range differences of about 0.9m...
